Seriously though my favorite moment was probably when I saw the complex in a tiny parking lot and literally stood right next to his kit as he played all the songs.

i need to learn how to play like that. the man can do so much with so little.

it was actually interesting to see him play with such a minimal kit for once, it reminded me of my other favourite contemporary drummer, greg saunier of deerhoof. he usually uses just a beat-up snare, kick and crash hat (and half-broken sticks). but his playing is on another level, yet totally different to jimmy's. in fact i'd say greg has the most unique and eccentric style of any drummer i've ever heard. very jerky and spasmodic, yet somehow it keeps everything in time and he also breaks up time in a way you've never heard before.

Man....I've never seen such a spasmodic drummer before....not my cup of tea (his playing & everything else).
And by the way...he is not "keeping everything in time"...he's playing free.
Back to Jimmy...

i didn't mean he was keeping time in this particular video, i just like what he plays here. you should check out some of the band's songs for a better idea, i don't know anyone who dislikes them.

that time he "got kicked out of the band" for "being unstable"

Oh what I would have given to have been a fly on the wall when that tirade was unleashed..

oh fuck that video made my day. what an awesome fucking drummer.

for starters, it's pretty amazing how full his sound is with just the most basic of kits. secondly, it's pretty amazing how many different fills he manages to milk out of one snare drum. thirdly, it's pretty amazing how much this triggers the 'wow this sounds like sp' zone in my brain, just hearing him play solo.

pretty amazing.

aside from the sheer impressiveness of his musicianship, the best thing about that is the clear technical nous the guy has. how many drummers can speak to the particular frequency ranges of individual instruments, and what tweaking is necessary prior to performance for a drum to sit well in a mix? presumably bill doesn't have that deep appreciation for what makes a set of drum tracks work on record, or the teargarden material would sound a lot better

hm, turns out you were right luke! considering i listened to the thing so many times, i don't know how i went to playing 6 from originally playing 8 and then forgetting which one was even correct. i guess i think my version sounds better. how arrogant.
