Band: The Orange Peels
How discovered: A friend of mine knows the singer and someone else in the band, and his roommate used to do their website. Sounds like: Jangly 60's influenced indie pop. Brian Wilson, R.E.M., The Byrds Song I defy you not to like: Something Strange Happens, Take Me Over Comments: I heard one of their songs at Starbucks, so I guess they are getting some exposure. |

Artist: Merlin
How discovered: my brother had the album 'merlin's arcade' before he traded it to me for something else. Sound like: indie rock/pop/some humour song that I defy you to not like: the playboy interview, redneck town other comments: on Channel 3 records...he's from Montreal, if i'm not mistaken?...a little goofy in some songs, about fairly serious subjects. Merlin's Arcade is such a fun, catchy record. |

Band: Kill Hannah
How discovered: They're not discovered yet, they're a local Chicago band that plays at the Metro about once a month. Carson Daly likes em, and showed up at a show they held at some abandoned warehouse in the middle of nowhere, so they might be big soon.. Sound like: Smashing pumpkins, radiohead, but poppier song that I defy you to not like: I wanna be a Kennedy, all that he wants, crybaby other comments: The guys are so nice, and being hot is of course a nice added bonus. They're gonna be huge, pumpkins huge, i guarantee it(even billy likes them). . .if they don't kill themselves first. But they're great. www.killhannah.com I love those guys, and Greg the bassist thinks I'm a "crazy girlie", lol. . .he's the one that likes coyote ugly. |

Might I add The Anniversary, Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys, Rock Over London, and obviously... THE GADJITS to this list? Ryan, you threw me off at first because I was like, WTF?! Who all knows these bands from KC? Then I looked at your username. D'oh! The Casket Lottery is excellent, and I adore Ultimate Fakebook. Most of those other bands are now-defunct though (i.e. The Glitter Kicks, Reflector, Frogpond) and I didn't *think* that Flick, Q, or Paw was still together. For those clueless out there, the Kansas City music scene rocks the house. Like, at very many levels. It's such a mixing pot of old-school blues and jazz, new-school rock and roll, and a lot of this silly emo-esque stuff that's coming out these darned days (i.e. The Anniversary, The Get Up Kids).. I definitely recommend browsing around on http://www.thezone.org/ and being informed. That's one thing I think Kansas City has that's great... the music scene. done raving, jillysp ------------------ trade me? 0:1's only. The French Kicks
http://www.frenchkicks.com NYC. Complex musical ideas wrapped around simple guitar riffs in short succint compositions. Good, not great like their contemporaries, The Strokes. Lots of potential to be found. -Dave |

I just picked up the Modern Age EP and the level of growth from that to Is This It? is astounding so I can only hope that the Kicks live up to the potential I'm hearing on their early recordings and follow suit down this path of success. -Dave |
