The Halloween party was fuuuuuuckin average, by the way.

Some of the people in that group of artists were having a party at the same time nearby, but by the time I realised I wasn't having fun and I tried contacting them, everyone had gone to sleep or something. I guess that's what I get for prioritising the cool kids over the weird kids.

I had a pretty weird outing tonight

It was a birthday party celebrating the November birthdays of a group of anarchists, one of them being my cousin, who I haven't seen much of until recently. He's a really lovely guy and we're very similar to one another. I thought that everyone there would be cool and chill like him, but it wasn't really the case. One of the first people I spoke to was very ornery about me using the term "comrade", saying it was a bit jargony. Which is weird, because later on, someone gave a speech calling everyone there their comrades. Later on there was someone who bragged about burning the communist flag. And there were fucking effigies. There was Donald Trump, Simon Bridges (current leader of the NZ National Party), John Key (a previous and very well known and well loved leader of the NZ National Party) and young Josef Stalin.

I had a plus one with me who is pretty apolitical, but open minded. She had met and approved of my cousin before. She had similar expectations as I did as to what the other party goers would be like. We would have stayed longer and gone with the rest to karaoke, but we started to feel pretty uncomfortable at a certain point. Someone also wanted to get a photo of everyone standing behind the burning effigies. We said our farewells to my cousin, claiming that we were feeling tired. No one else seemed to notice or care that we left.

Are these people ever off? Does everything have to be about the struggle even when we're enjoying our leisure time? I wonder if anyone there has ever thought about how people who have it worse off than them unwind, and if it involves posturing the same shit that they would do at a demonstration or a riot. This was one of the first gatherings like this that I've attended in person. Normally I'd associate with these people online, where it's easier to keep my distance from people that focus on the differences between our beliefs rather than our common goals. It's been an eye opening and learning experience.

Yeah, even online, I get pretty tired of communities that seem all about beating their chests politically, where each member tries to sound like the most enlightened or "woke" person there.

The fact they only dug as deep as having effigies of Trump, Stalin and two recent leaders of a centre-right party from New Zealand that's currently in opposition and probably also left of the Democrats should probably be enough to tell that they'd have been better off bonding over something legitimate like their shared identity crises.
