The ironic thing is that the only reason I'd be in the path of that bullet is that I was trying to prevent Nolan's assassination so that he could make more movies.

I know liking Nolan is un-post-punk these days because he's big-budget Hollywood and all that, but I think there are rare times when legitimate artistic merit and what's commercially lucrative intersect, and Nolan is one of such creators occupying that intersection.

We're still talking about the Nolan that did Insomnia, Inception and those awful Batman movies, aren't we?

I really dug how they were able to use sepia to mask some of the uncimematic characteristics brought on by relying entirely on natural lighting, but damn, I had to turn the volume way up to hear any of the dialogue on that one.

Still, it has everything I like in Nolan films: themes about obsession, subjective perception of reality, and a neat twist. 7/10 would go back in time and prevent assassination

To be fair, I haven't seen the war film with One Direction in it.

There's a chance that's good, right?

Insomnia and Dunkirk are the only two I haven't seen yet. Nothing I've heard about Insomnia has interested me much.

But I maintain that the first two entries of the Batman series are 👌. And I liked Inception, too.

When run through my forum dispute translator, you're just telling me his one-trick pony act has yet to run thin for you.

We've discussed The Dark Knight enough by now that it's become like seeing an adult leaving cookies out for Santa.

This is the closest I've gotten to seething outrage.

It's worth noting that I'm one of those weirdos who really liked Interstellar a lot.

Just saw The VVitch.

I at least went into it having had heard that it isn't really a conventional "horror movie," and that it's marketing as a conventional horror film is probably what soured some audiences on it, so I didn't bring those kinds of expectations to it. But I really don't understand why anybody would be disappointed to find that this isn't a typical horror film, because most typical horror films are awful.

I thought it was pretty good. My interpretation is that withcraft is being used as symbolism for female development and cultural understandings of the female body as "deviant" that are rooted in religion. The imagery of blood being used by witches in Satanic rituals seems to be remniscient of menstruation, and the conflation of blood and lactation in a couple of scenes (the goat lactating blood, the matriarch under the illusion that she is breastfeeding her son when really, a crow is pecking at her breast) seems to me to symbolize a rejection of motherhood, which is the greatest deviation from "proper female bodily function" in some religious spheres, and is synonymous with witchery. The accusations of Thomasin being a witch seem to be manifestations of her family's fears and uncertainty about her coming of age (which is also illustrated by the fact that they discuss marrying her off to another family for money, as she is nearing the age where that is to be expected).

The cinematography was really nice, with frames almost looking like charcoal portraits. The cinematographer also seems quite fond of using dark characters against mostly dark backgrounds, but framing them within a small window of light or bright white space.

I feel as though the descent into paranoia could have been done in a more gradual manner, and the payoff could have been better, but overall, I liked the film.

Any recs?

I'm kind of in the mood for a crime film, noir, or neo-noir right now, but I'm not necessarily set on that.

Also mostly in the mood for something kinda darker, but it doesn't have to be, like, the darkest of dark, most depressing shit in the world. Essentially, I just don't feel like watching a comedy right now, but probably not a Holocaust movie or one of those movies about how human endeavour is pointless, either.

I mean, human endeavour is pointless, yes, but I don't feel like I've got the energy or time for that sort of movie right now.

Ex_Machina

masterpiece
Isaac's performance is just a complete masterpiece and on my third viewing it hasn't gotten old at all

all 3 main performances are great but Nathan is like the most entertaining character of the last few years

Sicario 2. I'll give it a B. The first one was A+

I didn't like the end of this one. You can tell they decided beforehand that they were going to make a third so they wrote a shitty ending so they could make another movie.

i don't wanna watch that

Sicario seemed like such a perfectly resolved story and removing Blunt's character...
like I just don't get why it had to be made
especially without the director and DP
like where is there to really go

you pick up what i'm laying down for you, snapperhead?

I would have mentioned it before, but did you ever see Before the Devil Knows You're Dead?

Fits the bill and provides a neat call-back to our thing about non-linear narrative structure.
