Was Cogan's beef with Pavment all because of the Ranch Life lyric?
Or is there more to the story? I know that when the 2 bands later reformed that Spiral Stairs said that Billy Corgan "doesn't matter", but was there more to the beef from Pavements side at the time in 94 or was Corgan's animosity all the result of that one silly lyric?
The lyric in Range Life isn't even offensive or critical or anything, it's just silly. What was Corgan so mad about? Was Pavement also trashing him in the press at the time or something? Last edited by fuzzyroes : 02-20-2019 at 09:00 AM. |

For those who don't know, Corgan famously had Pavement thrown off of the Lolapalooza 1994 tour.

Pavement were the antithesis of Smashing Pumpkins - just a band that made music, weren't really pretentious at all, rooted in the kind of "indie culture" Corgan felt was attacking him personally
the Range Life lyric just opened the floodgates, i think the animosity only went one way cos I saw some interview with Malkmus where he said he was a fan |

That's the gist I got too, that the whole beef with Pavement was over that lyric. I wasn't sure though, but I assumed Pavement wouldn't be the kinda band to get in a mud-slinging match.
The fact that Billy set out to throw em off of the biggest tour of the year and shit is pretty insane. That's gotta be the result of some sort of serious narcissistic disorder. I mean sure, even if he was peeved with the lyric, surely they could've met up before the tour and smoothed things over. The Pavement guys probably would've appologized and explained that they were just having a little fun. I know Corgan's quirks are all well documented now, but I think it's these weird little instances where he goes bat-shit insane over nothing that really show his darkness. For a little context here, Green Day was also on that very Lolapalooza tour. I believe it was the New York date and Green Day was on stage and L-7 had literally spray-painted some signs calling Green Day sellouts and this and that and they came up on stage uninvited during the set holding up the signs to the crowd and Billie Joe and the band just laughed and had fun with it and took the higher road. I mean, that's an insulting act meant to embarrass the group, but if you're comfortable with who you are, then why should it matter? The fact that Corgan went ape-shit over the Range Life lyric speaks volumes IMO |

One has to wonder why Billy didn't get mad over this song
The opening lyric is literally "Hollywood is a breeding ground for assholes Egos get as big, as Billy Corgans (THAT'S BIG!)" |

Nofx are the punk Rolling Stones.
They've been facing a lot of heat lately though. At a show in Las Vegas they made some jokes about the country music festival shooting and for a 25th anniversary concert they were using these laminates (a spoof on their 94 classic "the cause") https://media2.fdncms.com/sfweekly/i...6.55.35_pm.png People were PISSED OFF They literally got dropped from their own festival after these controversies. |

Very distasteful, I know. But that's always been the bands brand.
When I saw them in Vancouver at the Warped Tour, there was a small amount of fans who had tickets with access to watch the bands from the side of the stage and they started making fun of this guy in a wheelchair saying that he was just lazy and making other cracks about him. I thought that was in poor taste. |

Even though people think Billy is the only one holding grudges, pavement never stopped covering 1979 live. They played the same festival in Brazil in 2010. Pumpkins were headlining, pavement sucked hard. |

Doing covers of 1979 is indicative of grudge-holding?

Years and years ago I heard of a DJ who went by Ill Cosby, which at the time seemed like an insanely good name
Always wondered what happened to the poor fellow, if he started over under a different moniker or did the honorable thing and committed seppuku |

They often change the lyrics to mock the band. I mean, people complain that Billy was talking about them sometimes back in 2010, but nobody cares if pavement was still using that beef to look cool during all those years and still do.

Haven't you forgotten to post the song and the lyrics in your new thread... Pavement: Range Life After the glow, the scene, The stage, the set Talk becomes slow But there's one thing I'll never forget Hey, you gotta pay your dues Before you pay the rent Over the turnstile turn out in the traffic There's ways of living It's the way I'm living Right or wrong, It's all that I can do, And I wouldn't want to let you be I want a range life, If I could settle down, If I could settle down, Then I would settle down I want a range life, If I could settle down, If I could settle down, Then I would settle down Run from the pigs, the fuzz, The cops, the heat Pass me your gloves, there's crime And it's never complete Until you snort it up or shoot it down You're never gonna feel free Out on my skateboard The night is just hummin' And the gum smacks are the pulse I'll follow… |
