i listened to oceania proper for the first time
it used to be a tradition when a new album rolled out i'd listen to the whole thing right away. but i'm older and pumpkins aren't a big part of my life like they used to be. so when oceania leaked i shuffled through a few songs, listened to a few that i liked during workouts or whatever and never really went back to it.
so i went on a roadtrip and decided it was time to put the cd in and listen to it from start to finish. i was surprised how good it was. it didn't BURN THE LIES OFF MY SOUL and didn't redeem alot of billiam's bullshit the past five years (or not entirely) but it took the siamese dream - adore era sound and contemporized it in a way that wasn't a rote rehash. even when the album's lesser second half where it goes all punk pop, songs like chimera were pretty good. i'll probably get sent to the shed for this but i didn't have any problems with the drumming. it think the only song i didn't like was glissandra. violet rays kind of drones on, seems overly dramatic and doesn't go anywhere, but alot of people seemed to like it so i dunno. oceania and PALE HARSE did some cool things new to "the band", probably more than the entirety of zietgeist. but ultimately i agree with the pitchfork review that not a whole lot of new terrain was to be found here 8.0/10, would buy from them again |

some of the songs have potential and some moments of brilliance peeking through (like all bill's work, even zeitgeist), but ultimately not that rewarding because it does nothing exciting. lyrics are very bad in general.
still, it's such an improvement over the other teargarden material, it's pretty striking comparatively. 6/10 |

yeah thats one thing i forgot to mention. the lyrics are pretty unrelatable but i guess i tuned out them and gave it no second thought since billy is pretty much a 47 year old omega concern with millions of dollars now. gotta play the expectations game sometimes

Don't dislike the album, just don't find myself going back to it too often. Oceania (song) was murdered in the studio, pity. Still like Panopticon and One Diamond every now and then.

I agree with everyone who said it has no staying power. I was pretty pumped about it first listen, but it fades quickly. I kind of dig Glissandra though... the emphasis on shoegaze thing is really the only part of Oceania's sound that sets it apart from all other SP records. It's like Siamese Dream w/o the Sabbath. Chimera is the worst one by far, it's fucking horrible. Even there though, the guitar solo fucking kills. So frustrating to hear little moments of greatness drowning in shit

also Jimmy could have made some of these songs fucking destroy, but mike is just not good enough to bring out their full potential

i liked the MBV nod with glissandra.. but i felt it should've went all the way with shoegazy pedal effects and everything. just sounds kind of neutered in that regard. i don't dislike it but i do skip past it almost always

Yes, I was going to mention Panopticon as the clearest example for how Mike is wasting the moderate potential some of these songs have.

The problem is that the good bits on this album are not signs of Billy's potential, ready to break through and make something brilliant again, but the last, fading remnants of his most special gifts, dying off forever.
It sucks to get old? |
