Default Favorite SAOSBV2: CYR jam so far?

I'm curious to see where my fellow jaded bitter Netphorians would rank these things.

Obviously this thread will become obsolete with the next countdown timer (which will be, yes, just two more songs... and then the same with the last timer) but at this point, I think that since we've heard 8/20 of the songs on this thing, that we are getting a pretty good feel for what we're in store for.

Instructions crucial to inspire critical thinking/analysis so we don't all just go right for that bottom option which I felt was a good inclusion.

I've only heard "Cyr" and "The Colour of Love" because they play them at my gym.

All I remember of "The Colour of Love" is that it's repetetive and lazy. I don't remember the exact melody, but I do remember that he just keeps on saying "the colour of your love is grey" and runs through a scale a couple of times.

"Cyr" wasn't terrible. It's not something I'd listen to on purpose, but if a totally different band played it or I didn't know who the Smashing Pumpkins were, I wouldn't say "this is an awful song, please turn it off." But I wouldn't say "this is a good song—who's the artist?" either. I found it weird how comfortably it sat next to all the other pop and rock songs on rotation at the gym. Really trying to tap into that zeitgeist, eh? To the point of homogeny and assimilation. What's weirder is that the video was playing, so it's visually reinforced that these 50-year-olds are trying to play in the same pen as The Weekend and Twenty One Pilots.

i'm saying color of love because he doesn't over sing on that one, and i feel like i can really hear a full band playing.

same could sort of be said for witch

i can't believe i'm the only one who clicked the bottom

birch grove i think is the only one i've bothered to try to do any deeper level listening to or thought on; someone was saying how the lyrics were about the band trying to be relevant or whatever. it's a pleasant enough tune

everything else is trash, i can't remember a single melody [including birch grove tbh].

repblogging here

Does he say "I know I'm ruthless, sigh"? In Ramona. LOL just got to the keyboards

"Of all the evidence
Of all I've ever been
Was some innocence to where I belong" ... is actually a really good melody, too bad it's just in the bridge

I'm giving this a 3/10 just because of that bridge melody. The rest of it sucks, especially that ridiculous keyboard

Wyytch is also very bad. There's that weird 'ooohhh...' before the chorus that sounds promising but wtf is the chorus. It's similar to the "lover, you're strange" part of Monuments. I think, not about to listen to that shit again. Or maybe it's GLOW. One of those parts about someone being strange

2/10 why

Anno Satana is much more catchy, and the lyrics are.... less bad. I don't actually like it better I don't think but it's more coherent and no embarrassingly bad parts. 4/10

Birch Grove, not a fan of the beginning. I agree with Ram, Corgan is at least trying to say something here. The keyboards just feel completely unnecessary and annoying. I bet this song is good acoustic. 5/10 Knock out the shitty keyboard and the intro and this is a good song.

Confessions of a Dopamine Addict: Lyrics seem particularly bad, and the singing pretty much ruins it. The melody is decent, almost. This could be a decent b-sides with reasonable singing. The first verse, when it gets repeated at the end (cool structure actually), is much better. 4/10

Wrath:
Starts pretty strong. Good lyrics:
If there's heaven, there's a place for us
There's a teenage dream
And my love's enough"
Unfortunately the song seems to get worse at it goes along.
Background vocals and again the keyboard is shitty. I like keyboards, really I promise.
3/10

Cyr: I think this is clearly the best song in the format they are all in. Best production, background vocals are good. Birch Grove is a better song, but this has much better production choices. I would not call it good, and while I do like the background vocals, they are a bit much in some places. Really sounds like it's trying to be catchy. Oh shit I forgot about the terrible, terrible bridge. 4.5/10

COL: The keyboards on this are just fucking terrible. You think they are alright at first. The driving beat is ok. Do I hear a bassline? Chorus would be good if it was surrounded by any other lyrics that had anything to them at all. But then you get your first taste of the shitty keyboards. This bridge is... OK... I guess... chorus... but then... OMG I FUCKING HATE THESE KEYBOARDS IT MAKES ME NEVER WANT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC AGAIN. I don't even know why I hate them so fucking much but I really do. 2/10 go fuck yourself with those keyboards

these are not really fair ratings since the newest two i've literally only listened to once each and the other ones like probably 3-5 times but there you have it

just listened to the new ones again and have revised.

in conclusion, agree with Ram Birch Grove is the best song

I mean, I can't remember the melody of "Cyr" either, but I just remember not disliking it as much as I disliked "The Colour of Love" when I heard it. That could have also been based on my mood, though.

Gotta be Birch Grove.
That's all synths and it serves the song, does not detract from it like the rest.
Background vocals are in the back behind the main (too loud) vocals.

Birch Grove because it actually seems focused and about something that means a lot to him.

I initially thought it was about him asking people to accept him for who is is now instead of who he used to be, but he said instagram that wasn't it at all, so who knows. Still a nice song on the whole.

Wrath is downright pretty, so that'd be my second choice.

i never necessarily listen to the artist on what a song means. i heard someone in an interview say [was it actually billy?] that their lyrics seemed meaningless at the time but reading back later they were actually about what they were going thru at the time

Wrath is probably the best, but it's not something I'll ever listen to again.

Oceania is probably the last SP album I could have playing in the car without being embarrassed at what I was listening to.

I'd put Cyr down as the worst album of the worst year 2020. There are dozens and dozens of albums that came out this year that have been awesome.. and then this embarrassing stack of songs rom my favorite childhood band. lol

Poll needs another option: “i listened to a few of these but can’t remember which ones and based upon how preternaturally terrible those were, i have been putting off listening to the other ones”
