I might even want to swap Starla in for Silverfuck and put Silverfuck on PI to harden it up a bit

Putting Starla and Silverfuck side by side is very badass.

Today is vapid. And it made bUlly famous. We all know how that played out.

Is this so you don't have to change your favorite song?

i really do think that Adore was the one record where James is in absolute full blow. after so many years of listening, i think i can pick out his contributions to most tracks with considerable accuracy, and his work on that record is so beautifully subtle and understated, yet it's easily responsible for a good 40% of what makes the best moments on the album work so well.

i'm kinda surprised to see it's not so well liked here. it's so fucking gut wrenching and unusually straightforward/honest, coming from the master of trickery and rhymes. 'mother, i hope you know that i miss you so'. brutal
Once upon a time is utterly beautiful and heart wrenching. Perhaps his most simple, elegant and emotional song in my opinion. Love the electric tour (1998) version more so, it’s gorgeously mournful.

I agree, but it’s also 1 of 4 tracks that completely sink Adore because they’re too long, repetitive and plodding:

Once Upon a Time
Tear
Crestfallen
Shame

They kill the pace and flow of the album.

in the "boring one man's opinion" section today, we have:

i think SD and PI are kinda perfect snapshots of the band, each record in its own way, and wouldn't want to see either change. i mean yeah, objectively SD could have probably benefitted from the inclusion of some of the stronger PI tracks, but as they stand, they are the perfect companion pieces:

SD the intricate, multilayered, labored-over heavy cadillac, PI the feathery, loose, diverse collection of great songs taking the same line of melody and approach in a different direction.

man i just can't stop writing posts like this can i. god damnit what a jackoff

Sweet Sweet is the only SD track I'd happily live without. It's too short to be of any consequence, nice as it is. It should've either gone Silverfuck - Luna, or stuck in Hello Kitty Kat as one last blast of guitar madness before Luna.

I find Adore is best listened to in more than one sitting - one sitting per side perhaps. That way the tracks don't drag.

I think having one song over 10 mins (Silvercrank) and one under 2 minutes (Sweet Sweet) along with a handful of 3-5 min and 5-8 minute songs creates a nice bookend for the album as a whole and helps the whole thing achieve a nice balance. It's kind of like the album sequencing equivalent of the slow breakdown section in Geek USA...by itself it's not great...but in the context of the whole it makes everything much more shiny and oh so brighter.

Smashing Pumpkina discography ultimate reimagined list::

1. Gish
2. Siamese Dream
3. Pisces Iscariot
4. Mellon Colle and the Infinite Sadness
5. The Aeroplane Flies High

END.

Seriously can you imagine if Billy just QUIT after TAFH? SP would probably be universally worshipped by critics and fans at the same level of Nirvana right now as this unbelievably prolific and consistently genius band incapable of anything short of absolute brilliance.

And a 2018 reunion tour would sell out stadiums around the world in minutes. People would be mortgaging their homes for tickets on Stub Hub. All of us at Netphoria would be at the shows crying tears of joy and exaltation in the audience.

But no. bUlly had to keep running his big dumb mouth for 20 years.

adore should have been a dual EP. 2x 20mins instead of 74mins.

and then the real double machina album

Dude should just have kept doing double albums.

Adore was a great album. Don't get the EP comment. Annie Dog was the only misstep on it. As for Machina, both albums could be condensed into one killer album. Both albums are uneven and Machina 2 has some flat out crap on it.

Adore is one of the best examples of poor sound mixing in the history of music. The songs are great but the studio version we got was horrible. Also Jimmy's absence on the drums is too obvious.

Add Adore with Jimmy Chamberlin on the drums and Butch Vig as producer.
