Too acoustic? Too electronic? Perhaps sit nicely at that Adore balance.

I feel Rick Rubin's name gets thrown around too much. It just doesn't carry the weight it used to have. Billy name dropping Rick Rubin reminds me of his excitement getting Tommy Lee to drum on Monuments lol. A producer can only do so much with what they are given. Ditto for Tommy.

I rather Billy work with The Dust Brothers.
Why would you be excited about Tommy Lee? He was a drummer in a 80s band, they're all shit.

At the risk of being ostracised, but IMHO the live DVD from If All Goes Wrong is the best post-reunion release. Especially the 5 acoustic bonus rehearsal songs, Mama + Peace & Love are perfect..

You should ask Billy that one since he was the one excited and promoting it like some awesome thing to have Tommy Lee on a Smashing Pumpkins, whoops I mean The Billy Corgan Experience record.

I wasn't then with Tommy Lee and I'm not now with Rick Rubin.

Billy is happy to have any retro drummer in his band it would seem.

You know, I've never felt his song writing has ever really declined. There have been a few clunker songs here and there(Widow Wake My Mind, etc), but any artist will naturally have good ones and bad ones when you have a catalog of a thousand songs. For the most part, his riffs, progressions, ideas, approaches and lyric writing is almost always solid. I actually credit a lot of the bad vibes of his work in recent years to Mike Byrne, Tommy Lee, and producers without that "Pumpkin" feel.

The one thing Billy's been getting wrong since 2000, in my opinion, is his attempt to work in vibrato into his vocals. It led to all the dropped consonants, the shaky/weak attack, and the loss of emotion. In short, it just doesn't sound like "Billy Corgan." He sounds like he's trying to sing like someone else. His pre-2000 singing style didn't try to make up for the fact that he wasn't a great vocalist... it highlighted his strengths. His screams, his fragile/angelic softness, and the dynamic switch between the two... it just worked for him and the lyrics he tends to write. It was endearing, pleading, expressive and weirdly relatable. But nowadays, it just makes me cringe.

I'm sure it's a tick he's developed over time, and even if he wanted to get rid of the vibrato, it'd be almost impossible to stop. But I really wish he'd put in the work to see if he could break from it.

how, in serious candidness, can you say mellon collie and monuments are on the same tier in terms of songwriting

on dead highways her black beauties roam
for june angels so far from home
for a lover, a faded picture
to tread lightning, to ink the lavender sky

vs.

run to me
run to me
run to me
run to me

Rick Rubin... God, Mr Bill is really trying hard to get back to appealing to the mainstream younger generation. Maybe next album, after this one fails too, he'll try Timbaland. Or Pharrell!!! Yeah that should work!!

I think his mind declined. I'm sure there are good B-sides from the MTAE era, but everything on the record was just a shitty godawful verse chorus verse radio friendly pop song with guitars and crappy vocals

I remember in 2015 he did a duet with Marilyn Manson, just as a joke, and he sounded like his old self

I guess he thinks the new vox sound good for some reason?

I wonder how Jonathan Monte feels about all this. He must be in a fine state of nervous tension, his senses acutely sharpened by keen anticipation, his rectum puckered in anxious yearning.
