MTAE was released almost 3 years ago
to put that in perspective, 941 days after Gish came out was Dec 24, 1993. Siamese Dream was written and recorded in that time, the SD tour had started, beginning with three nights at the Metro to celebrate the record's release. 941 days after SD came out was Feb 22, 1996. MCIS had been written and recorded, the MCIS tour had begun; the band playing up to three hours of music a night, beginning the evening in pajamas with an acoustic set, then capping off the extended electric set with a 20 minute Silverfuck jam. 941 days after MTAE came out is today, Jul 3, 2017. We got a fucking Siddartha record that no one bought and a new hat. |

No one bought Monuments to an Elegy either. I have not listened to the album since 2015 (when I gave it a listen again before I saw them live to see if the album held up at all), and it felt as forgettable then as it did when it came out. If nothing came out of the whole fiasco, I think it showed Billy what 7 years (at that time) of shitting out mediocre product under the Smashing Pumpkins name did. People did not even care enough about the album to trash it. The friend I saw that show with (who loved the band from Siamese Dream to Machina, but never really kept up with the band when they came back) probably summarized the general feeling about the songs from that album. He found "Drum + Fife" and "One and All" inoffensive, if compeltely forgettable, and went to the bathroom during "Run2Me."
With the three year periods you spoke of (Gish --> Siamese Dream --> Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness), the band produced quality product that seemed to improve (or at least stay consistent) from release to release, sold more each album cycle, and brought new fans (even if some would move on after MCIS). At this point, Smashing Pumpkins is a legacy act, and Corgan seems to realize the only move left is playing with James, D'arcy, and Jimmy. In all honesty, I'm actually kind of excited about his next solo album. Even if it disappoints, at least Corgan will be disappointing on his own and not further tarnishing the SP brand. I would honestly not be upset if we did not get anymore Smashing Pumpkins music, unless it was one or two bonus tracks that comes along with the inevitable Greatest Hits package that will come when the band starts playing reunion shows. |

My iPod crashed last weekend (fuck you I still use an iPod), forcing me to manually reload everything and I decided not to dump MTAE back into it. Haven't listened to it in full since early 2015 anyhow, and every time a song would come up on shuffle, I would either be annoyed or indifferent.

I still wanted more music after Oceania came out because it seemed like something good was still possible. Once MTAE was dropped, any shred of hope was lost.
Still, Billy in studio with Jimmy always has its moments. |

I think the main problem is just the total lack of consistent content. If he put out new music every year or 2 then there would be a little something for everyone, and maybe he could hit his stride. But ever since Jimmy left the releases have been so infrequent that it just makes the stuff that was released stick out so much more.

I mean the guys a musician for crying out loud. Is it really too much to ask for 12 new songs every 2 years? And if he can't even manage that he shouldn't complain that people are pining for the old days because if they are, it's at least partly because he simply isn't putting out as much music.

I remember a few weeks after this came out and Billy was pitching a fit that no one was giving him his due, a commentator on another site I read said something to the effect of "Aww, poor little Billy made himself a monument to an elegy and no one cares!"
Still makes me chuckle to this day. |

Never fucking gets old
I sometimes wonder if that or soon after was the moment when the walls came tumbling down and he had no choice but to finally accept people were only paying him lip service. Gotta be the reason Day For Night got shitcanned, the lack of anyone giving a shit about MTAE wrecked his confidence. NOBODY BELIEVES I MADE A THREE STAR RECORD!!!!! NOBODYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! |

It's really too bad Billy Corgan keeled over and died shortly after that last Metro show in 2000.

Deep inside bill is just that special little boy that everyone abandoned b/c he couldn't make them, force them to see how special he was. He is not a 3 star lil bill: he is 5/5 a good boy! So why can't those mean ol critics just hug him with some nice, warm perfect scores, just some softness in that hug pls, o until the tears stop o!

It's not even a musical career we're witnessing at this point; it's a sadly neverending story about childhood trauma and mental illness

Didn't he drive around in a van and then abandon that documentary project so that he could drive around in another van and do it again? Bully fucking sucks. Seriously. Solo album due in April/may? Bullshit. My disappointment is long overdue. Siddartha? $125 now? I'd pay $60
