Default The Ricky Gervais/ Stephen Merchant appreciation thread

Good god, why am I so late to the party in watching their content?

Watched the British Office recently and just finished Season 1 of Extras and now I'm watching Lifes Too Short. These guys' brand of humor is hysterical. I had only seen Gervais from guest-roles and I never thought much of him, but his writing is just hilarious.

Anyone know why Lifes Too Short got canceled after just one season? This is some funny shit. Merchants show Hello Ladies got cancled after 1 season too and it was pretty damn funny... Fucking HBO!

Since seemingly every other post of yours is "I love this, why didn't I give it a chance earlier?" don't you think it's time to start opening your mind a little so that other stuff doesn't slip past your radar?

He needs things to be old and have nostalgia wrapped around them to give them a fair shot.

Hey, that's not true. He likes modern bands, such as Modest Mouse...

Honestly, it's not the nostalgia bullshit that bothers me but more of the "I never gave this a chance and now I love it where has this been all my life" like jesus dude, don't you ever wonder what other things you're missing out on by being so goddamn narrow-minded in just about every aspect of your life?

I didn't have HBO when these shows originally aired. And I do give a lot of modern music a chance... I just don't like it. It all sounds the same.

I can't believe HBO canceled Hello Ladies and Lifes Too Short. Those shows were priceless! Stephen Merchants character in Hello Ladies sort of reminds me of myself. Obviously his character is much more successful than me, but I feel like we're kindred souls.

Yeah, the one with the laugh track.

I always wished there were more than 6(?) episodes. I feel like once the concept of a "dirty" sitcom gelled, they tapped into something rather unique. More Pam Adlon is always nice, too.

Watched half of the first season, sorta stalled out. I had a hard time relating to the mother/daughter angle I think.

That's what makes it so sad and sickening. Like dude, why'd you have to be like that? You were literally the greatest living comedian.

I connected so hard with his standup, his FX show and Horace & Pete, but I don't know when -- if ever -- I'll be up for revisiting any of that.
