"...throwing a pebble in the ocean." - Corgan
Quoting http://www.nme.com/news/smashing-pumpkins/59456#
He's not throwing a pebble in the ocean, he's throwing turds in the ocean. If the music was any good it would have a much better response and following. If you read Corgan's quotes you'd think that he thought he was still putting out good music. My prediction: Oceania will bomb and it will lead to the end of the Pumpkins. Billy Corgan will produce crap for the next 15 years or so then in his late 50s/early 60s he will put something great again. |

"If we're able to get that sense that something is happening again and get people to rally behind us a bit, I think the next three, four years will be very interesting for the band. I think if ['Oceania'] basically hits the same wall a lot of the other stuff has hit, we're going to have to step back and really evaluate where we're going, because it's a tremendous amount of energy to put out to just feel like you're throwing a pebble in the ocean."
It could really be over. |

Not at all. 60% of their sets live are from the 90s and bands change all the time. I'm cool with this. I could care less who is in the band if the music is good and the shows are great. Problem is they are just not as good as they used to be. I understand Billy is solely responsible for this and he should shut it down if this last effort does not blow up.

SP2-3 is the only thing Billy's ever done that I am ashamed to talk about. ZWAN was good, TFE was good, the shit he writes for other bands is good; the man still has talent, he just can't get to it through the shit he's mired himself in. I'd be happy to see him go solo. |

by the way i thought the interview was pretty practical, the teargarden suite was pretty a stupid idea to begin with and abandoning it was the way to go and he pretty much said straight out that he was done with the album and the concept and should be perfectly aware that he's publically admitting his wrongness, which we all know is pretty fucking rare for him
i like the idea that "if it hits the same wall" they'll have to re-evaluate, that could be hopeful. I would like to hear something good, and I think it's possible with the right attitude and this article gives me a sense that maybe it actually is there. The "pebble in the ocean" bit is actually true, I mean billy corgan misread the future of the internet and assumed that people would care about one song released every month. He overcommitted because he's unabashedly ambitious, but in the end he's realized that it's all about getting the buzz of the release going just like it always has been, it's just you have to pressbomb the entire internet and get mags like NME to talk about it. Besides the fact that recording a whole album worth of songs together at once lends a cohesive whole to the work, rather than the herky, jerky, "I'll release a song when I get around to it," methodology. It's a step in the right direction, guys. Jeez. Last edited by Trotskilicious : 09-28-2011 at 12:26 AM. |

i'm just pissed he expected to light the world on fire with tbk and its release model. wasn't the whole point of selling Today (which was once a sacrosanct song, allegedly) to Visa so that tbk would already be funded as its own little indie thing and it mattered fuckall whether it was a "hit" or not?
anyway i still think he's on the right track now but my concern is that he'll actually put out a relatively good album only to get largely ignored. oh well |

my prediction?
he puts out the album. it has 2 or 3 good songs. the rest either medium level or total suck level. they tour, the audience is luke warm to the new material, only wants to hear bullet and tonight tonight, billy loses it halfway through and starts bitching at the audience for not getting it and being with the times, some band members get fired and/or leave, REPEAT CYCLE. C'mon, we went through this in 2007. buckle up for another ride. |

Problem is that the songs were nowhere that frequent. He announced TbK this time two years ago, we have twelve songs to show for it, not the twenty two that we should have if he was doing a song a month. Oceania will bring it up to 25 songs, and land us at exactly the right number to be right on track, releasewise. But it's a much smarter idea to push an album than throwaway internet singles.

by putting more pressure on the band to succeed - or else - the fans will be watching with baited breath to see what they by now expect will be a failure. but then the album will actually be popular. he's just hyping things up.

"throwing a pebble in the ocean"
Isn't that just a negative way of saying that the Pumpkins are on an even playing field with lots of other bands? It sounds like he thinks he deserves the privilege of major label support like it was 1995 or something. What happened to letting the music stand on its own? |
