Default Artists that fully embrace 80s pastiche

It really is a thing now for artists to be totally upfront about ripping off / paying tribute to the 80s. You have an artist called Miami Nights 1984. Another artist called Com Truise. And another one called Chromeo.

I've mentioned how huge the 80's are now, but no one here cares

how huge they are NOW? Revisiting the 80s has been a thing since the early 2000s.

Miami Nights 1984 are pretty obscure. Chromeo is big now thanks to a hit song. Com Truise is probably somewhere in the middle.

I think the huge success of Chvrches has proven that 80s revival stuff is still big.

It bugs me when Chvrches are compared to like DM (who obviously i love) and such. It's synths yeah. To me it still sounds pretty modern (or at the very least, post 80's). I don't really hear a similarity. I mean specifically to their 80s output anyway. I mean synthpop having been born into the 80s because its when synths came out (well no the 70s but until people started commonly using them) automatically links that sound to the 80s in people's minds. But i don't think it's fair to say a band like Chvrches is 80's revival.. Those Chvrches songs couldn't have happened in the 80's. They mainly use post 2000's synths for one except a Juno 106 (which is a mid 80s synth) but then again that never REALLY went out of fashion and has been used throughout the 90's and 2000's by many artists.

There are a few tracks like Lies and Lungs that have a somewhat modern feel to them as far as the production. But most of the album sounds decidedly retro.

hmm....the production is VERY post 80's i'm afraid. Let's just agree that i'm right and you're wrong.

I find more things 90's than 80's on this record, if one wants to go there. Though i still maintain its a pretty modern synthpop record.

What do you think of the newest Depeche Mode album Delta Machine? I like it a lot. It's probably my third fave D.M. album behind Black Celebration and Exciter.

If I can intervene here

Wow, I certainly don't agree with you there, but it was alright. Another case of "okay album with excellent songs" both from the record itself & bonus tracks etc., kinda like sotu was to me. Playing the angel's still the latest great record from them for me tho

Top 5 are sofad, ultra, pta, violator, & black cele btw (not necessarily in that order
!)

Is future islands 80s throwback?

If so, does it matter?

Gotta agree with this and that's why I can't enjoy most of their songs.

I hate that "modern" usually means "shit"

I like Precious Suffer Well and John the Revelator from PTA and Home from Ultra but other than that not a fan of either of those albums. I actually have Home on a trip hop mix cd I made. Actually of all the songs from the Ultra era only Home and Only When I Lose Myself are ones that I really like and that stick out to me. I think Only When I Lose Myself is one of the best things they've ever done. It sounds like it would fit perfectly on Exciter which is probably my favorite album of theirs.

Thank you for letting us know.

Also, congratulations for knowing a band that is pretty obscure. Well done! I am impressed.

i agree with the bolded text but vehemently, vehemently disagree with everything else

like, what the fuck? exciter second best on top of that... like i'm no hater of exciter, i love it for what it is but to like that so much & not have any love to give for ultra??? get real, son!

i mean, i guess it'd make sense if you were one of those "80s purists" i've never understood but black cel & exciter are like the two extremes of the band (well, minus maybe songs of faith)

My point is just that i really don't think Chvrches is attempting to emulate an 80s sound at all which if they were, they'd likely be all about using synths from the era. Probably. Not that you couldn't replicate the sound anyway but...
