Q&A - Programa Livre - São Paulo (1998)
In 1998, the band toured South America for the second time. They were the main guests of a show called Programa Livre. PL used to be watched by teen-agers and young adults, and the idea was to discus topics such as politics, literature, arts, and social issues.
Until now, we only had video with the band playing (they played pug, Ava Adore, perfect and 1979), but the Q&A session wasn't up online until now. As far as I remember the show was live (or live-ish) A few years ago, Groisman (host) mentioned the Pumpkins as the most difficult band/people he had interviewed, and that he was only able to win them after he introduced Ronaldo (who was serendipitously recording a show that day at the same studios) to Billy. Billy also talked about that presentation (when they were reissuing Adore, if I remember well), mentioning he didn't know much about the show and how uncomfortable he was for having to sing such dark lyrics to a very young audience, which that day was particularly younger than the usual. Cool. I only skimmed your post, so I was surprised midway through.
And the host goes "So, what do you want to know?" and Billy is speechless. Makes me feel a little better when I meet a musician I'm really into and can't think of anything good to say. In one sense, I've got enough to say to go on for hours, but being forced to pick just one question or comment—nothing feels right.
Of course, that didn't stop the kid who asked TSP what they thought of Brazil even though the host had just asked them that. Or the other mundane questions I've personally heard/read the pumpkinsgete asked a dozen times before, which means Billy's probably been asked those questions 1000 times before. I had to laugh how they deadpanned their made-up stories about how they met, leaving most of the in-studio fans to probably take them seriously. |

When Billy is non-answering or joke answering every other instagram question these days, keep in mind he's been doing that his whole career. Back on the 2008 tour, when people were getting indignant over Billy insulting and provoking the audience, I'd think where have you all been? he's always been like this. "You sound like an audience that's not sure if you want an encore." lol

Phew, deep dive find on that interview there - did you upload that yourself? If not, how did you find it with a title like that?!?!
So many other questions, but yes - where was this filmed at, and who are all of these kids? Feels like they're giving an assembly presentation at a high school with all of the matching shirts, etc. Seems like there is little to no interest in the band from the kids in the room, but when that soccer dude (?) comes out, they start losin their minds. Whole thing has a palpable awkward to it. |

It was a TV show, all big bands and artists played there when touring in Brazil.
Those kids are wearing they school uniform because they were there with their school/college, and probably had no clue of who the band was – you wouldn't know who the guests were until you were in. The Pumpkins were/are popular in Brazil, but their music was not like Alanis Morissette that had songs in soap operas. The soccer "dude" (I guess you don't fallow football) is only Ronaldo, one of the biggest footballers. There was a world cup in 1998, and Brazil lost the finals after all the commotion around Ronaldo, as he collapsed in the dressing just before the game. Billy had mentioned his name (and also Romário's) earlier on when answering one of the kids questions. By the way, the interpreter kinda made up/changed questions and answers a bit. |

I didn't post part 1 cause it was online before
Here are the songs 1979 (which they played after requested by someone in the audience. That's how happy Billy was after meeting Ronaldo!) Ava Adore Pug |

God I love Adore so much but those percussionists suck so bad. Totally can't enjoy the music. Can you imagine Jimmy during this era.

Adore is the one era Garson kinda works on though, considering they were missing Jim's highly technical fills and even Bill was holding back a bit on the "guitar theatrics," so it was mostly only the one lord showing off
