It's interesting from a behind-the-scenes perspective or as an exercise in storytelling, but the imposition of the narrative, for me, cheapens the experience. It's like having a good book spoiled by the movie version; the world you'd imagined becomes flat and full of contrivance. The Fall & Redemption of Glass? No thanks. Let the context of my life help create an experience in tandem with the music and artwork.

Drive through the back roads at dusk trying to beat the storm home. Pull over when you can't see through the windshield anymore and let it pass overhead. The fireflies come out after and the cornfields smell sweet. You're on the cusp of something. Drown me in a sea of rain and night and mud
This is one of the best things I've ever read on here

The Machina narrative / mystery was some bullshit Bill made up after the album’s release by posting impenetrable nonsense and then sucking in gullible fans. It was fun, no doubt. But it has nothing to do with the music and shouldn’t be any factor in sequencing the record.

There is an except of the prose in the actual MACHINA I and II booklets. It wasn't an afterthought, but still pretty abstruse overall. Also, Glass and the Machines of God / a Modern Fable started to appear mid 2000 on the O-site. Tons of work went into the actual story side of things. This has all been forgotten now. I remember the era being the first time I had ever been a part of a true multimedia experience. Finding the literal hidden easter eggs, secret sites, chards of glass tidbits, etc. I really think Billy, despite his failures, was a visionary during this period. Everyone and their manager has ripped off his viral, internet driven pseudo-band concept. The Gorillaz flawlessly executed this exact same model about two years later.

Here's some reading material for the uninitiated:

Funny you speak of God. After all, that is the happy ending to the mystery.

I've never really cared much about the "Machina Mystery" stuff either.

I don't doubt that Corgan had some vague story ideas and concepts in mind when making the album and that it wasn't just a total afterthought, but they probably weren't very well-formed. What is the "mystery," anyway? In a typical mystery, while you don't know the answer until you solve it, you at least know what the question is ("Who shot Mr. Burns?", for example).

But just having a vague, undefined story, and claiming that the reason it's so inscrutable is because what the story even is is the "mystery" we're all supposed to solve is some J.J. Abrams Mystery Box bullshit.

i guess there already was a plotline of sorts

the task was to make it seem substantive and deep

Ok guys, I am gonna dish out some deep lore facts here: Billy, the character, sleeps with the June character and then she dies. June is Courtney Love. They had a real life falling out around this time.

The plotline is: "Suck my dick. I'm rich; suckers!" - William P. Corgan

I think we have a better chance at winning the MACHINA mystery. Maybe its all like the last Pink Floyd session with Syd Barret. In the fact that there is no answer to the question and it will live on forever as an expression of melancholy and eternal sorrow.

Someone had asked WPC a few Q&A ago, if we could expect the Machina reissue in 2020. He didn't want to give a date for it.

So it might not be before next year, after the release of the next Shiny And Oh So Bright...

Syd Barrett...

His last documented expression:

Here’s some deep lore.

June was a word Billy put in a song once because it sounded good in a rhyme scheme.
He brought “them” back in Machina as well as the characters “Zero / Glass” as some vague concept he hadn’t worked out at the time. When he saw fans latch on to it he tried to spin a narrative. The narrative was terrible and added nothing to the music. If anything it detracted from the ambiguity of the songs.
The subsequent cartoon was terrible.

I give a wet fart on the machiba mystery...

Album is ok with a bunch of good songs.

What can we expect from shiny vol23? I tell ya: mettallic guitars accompanied by cheesy 80 synths and bolzis voice standing out in the mix. Compressed to death with one ir 2 jeffy guitar licks.

Grannyband

IMO Bill tried to write some form of narrative, but he only got as far as producing a bare-bones plot outline before Virgin told him they weren't interested in doing another double album. So then you had chapters showing up in his blog entries, one tossed in with Machina II, etc

It was never so much a mystery as a bunch of chapters of a story written in abstract and just scattered all over the place after the initial idea to make a cohesive work out of them got waylaid
