This will be my only contribution to this pedantic argument.

One can be acting pretentious on purpose or not.

Examples: Corgan, 1995. Totally being pretentious on purpose. Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness

Corgan, 2000. Machina and the Machines of God. serious business of making a serious album. "It's not a skirt, it's Gaultier." Not being pretentious on purpose (and not everything from the era was pretentious). But the idea of touring as some kind of rock band playing a rock cliche that turned into an actual rock cliche was not on purpose

I dunno, I think in 1995 Corgan had these delusions of grandeur due to his huge success with Siamese Dream and was setting out to legitimately make a masterpiece. I don't think he was in the mindset of pulling the wool over everyones eyes and putting on some sort of an act. I think that was all genuine Corgan in all of his insanity.

To his credit, MCIS is as close to a masterpiece as you'll get with current mainstream music. He pulled it off. I guess one could argue that he "embraced his pretentiousness"... But he wasn't just putting on some kind of an act to appear cool - Like I believe Elphenor is.

It's like that NOFX song says: "Ego's get as big as Billy Corgans- WOW THAT'S BIG!"

All of his confidence was 100% legit.

you can write a masterpiece and be pretentious. you dont think he knew that mellon collie and the infinite sadness was perhaps the most pretentious title one could come up with? and titles like "porcelina of the vast oceans"? come the fuck on

The argument here is whether pretentiousness is inherently an act. It most certainly isn't.

That's all I'm getting at Reprise

All idiocy aside: Adore could have been a lot better / more memorable video if Billy wouldn't have gotten lazy and pushed through with the 1 take idea. Instead, the camera goofs at the end and shows the crew and he said "fuck it, lets keep it because 'art'" and the rest is history. Now, the bg actors were already getting pissy remind you, (so says Billy on the commentary) but IMO, if he would have either pushed through or told everyone to come back tomorrow to finish, I feel the video would have been a lot more memorable. Instead, he got lazy/cheap and now we have a pretty cool video with an awesome concept instead of an awesome video with an awesome concept. But if you think about it, this is the difference between Mellon Collie/SD/Gish Sp and Adore+ SP. After Mellon Collie, you can just see Billy getting comfortable and cutting corners. It wasn't "life or death" anymore you know?
