I never actually looked up the lyrics to Being Bland before and I had no idea he was just calling out days of the week and the end of the song. It's a little hard to discern what he's saying at the end and now I wish I could go back to not knowing. |

Which song is that from? I didn't end up downloading the leak of the new album because popups that seemed really sketchy kept coming up on the site. Billy ain't worth getting my computer infected with malware.

it's from marchin on, the song ppl are raving about like it's some return to form. they seem to think that it's got aggressive riffs and the old snarl BUT IT DOESN'T. in some ways it's the lamest of the bunch becos it tries so hard and fails so pathetically.
the line actually is "she stabs the empty clock." |

LOL, I mean, the lyrics aren't as bad as BURN DOWN THE SUN or we're in the middle (ghosts), but they're still pretty weak. Maybe not cringeworthy, but those WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA parts definitely are. Not sure if those really count as lyrics by my God are they annoying as fuck. |

for sure, the whoas in that song make me wonder if every single person who was in the studio that day and is responsible for not preventing that crime is completely deaf.
it helps to imagine Corgan in a bunny suit standing in his backyard on a heavy flight day and counting chemtrails ("rainbows") with the satisfied facial expression of a toddler, every chemtrail gets a whoa. |

"A friend called Neil" just always stuck in my craw as a really awkward way to express the meaning
It might as well be "A man whose parents named him Neil, who is my friend" I know it's a common enough way to refer to your friend; it just grates on me |

There’s no way it’s about his wife. They were still on good terms and together. He even had her with him on a radio interview after the album came out and she was talking. Clearly it’s about Courtney. His wife was a classy decent lady and she made the right call divorcing someone who allegedly was cheating on her with some drug skank.
Also XYU is great. I don’t care about revisionist history labeling it un-PC. That line of thinking is the death of art. |

Maybe he's talking about every person in the world named Neil. I can't wait for the unreleased SP B-Side "Neil Before Zod" to finally emerge from the vault.
NEIL YOUNG NEIL GAIMAN NEIL DIAMOND NEIL SIMON EVERY NEIL WILL KNEEL BEFORE ME BEND EVERY KNEE COME ON NEIL I'LL MAKE YOU ALL FEEL NEIL ARMSTRONG NEIL GORSUCH NEIL MOTHERFUCKING PATRICK HARRIS EVERY NEIL WILL KNEEL BEFORE ME BEND EVERY KNEE COME ON NEIL I'LL MAKE YOU ALL FEEL NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON NEIL PEART VINCE NEIL DIANE NEAL SHE WAS ON LAW AND ORDER IN CASE YOU DON'T REMEMBER NEIL |

What's the point of listing the lyrics individually, they have all sucked since Zwan.
Maybe even since (and including) Machina. I think the heavier music on Machina and Shitgeist masked the bad lyric writing, but when he got "heartsy" again on Colonoscope, I realized he had lost this sort of magic as well. Evidence-- In the arms of sleep: Sleep will not come to this tired body now Peace will not come to this lonely heart There are some things I'll live without But I want you to know that I need you right now I need you tonight I steal a kiss from her sleeping shadow moves 'Cause I'll always miss her wherever she goes And I'll always need her more than she could ever need me I need someone to ease my mind But sometimes a someone is so hard to find Owata: Right off the silver screen Into a moonbeam To the Indian sun Catch up with Jesus The stars beneath us Oh what a beautiful night Cool in your pocket You can unlock this night Cool in your pocket rocket, pocket, FU billy |

“bleed in your own light
dream of your own life I miss me I miss everything I’ll never be And on and on I torch my soul to show the world that I am pure deep inside my heart no more lies” Sigh. He used to write such beautiful lyrics. |

They’re so indisputably great that no one could ever think to call them that. What happened to that Billy?? |

"A Chicago Sun-Times reviewer, Jim DeRogatis, gave Smashing Pumpkins a few bad reviews, saying of 'Hummer,' for example, 'the lyrics are sophomoric, and the song is stupid.' This got him barred from attending the Double Door shows. Some of Billy's statements on this can be heard on the 'Drown' bootleg." lol, he got banned from 2x Door, and remember this: "But Chicago wouldn't have it. "Pretentious," railed Tribune columnist Rex Huppke, in a ludicrously rigid opinion piece that ran before "Siddhartha" even opened and that subsequently inspired Corgan to ban the newspaper from covering the event." BILLY "BELLY" CORGAN = DONALD "LITTLE HANDS" TRUMP |

"lover, you're strange"
this one is like a wet toot. "Cool in your pocket Rocks for your rocket ride Cool in your pocket" Wordsmith right here. "I don't wanna fight / Every single night" The lazyness of this first line. It was the lead off lyric for SP2.0 and it was such a stinker. The delivery made it worse I know... |

Yeah i always figured it was a shout-out to Young. The time it was written I think Billy was playing the benefit concerts etc including sharing a tipi with him iirc.

I'm no expert on this stuff but figured Billy cheated on his wife with Yelena? I mean she was on the scene when shooting the Zero and Thirty-three videos. There's some ugly lyrics in XYU, no doubt, it's like cathartic venting. I don't think he comes out of it any better than the woman, whoever that may be, I don't think that was the point though. |
