as a non sequitur, disk closer is an important spot.
it's a book end.
it's got as much importance as the opening instrumental, and that's no insult.
taking the moment to step aside from albums continuity (as disjointed as it is) is still really important to the continuity of the entire album. it makes the record breath because for a brief moment it's NOT a billy corgan song. in that respect I guess james could have contributed ANYTHING, he happened to write a nice sweet iha ballad (and lets be honest, it's a pretty typical iha song)

no. its just a fact of life that the boy should have been on mcis; making the album better, and repairing fractured relationships.

Don't complain because you can't read some of the text. If you want the book that badly, go buy it.

Shit, I initially read that as just "Monte ups his version covered in crayon and lipstick," and started downloading eagerly before reading the first part of the sentence.

loved billy's comments about farewell and goodnight. it's a song they never would have bothered with if not for the mellon collie concept. such a "sly" dig at iha's songwriting. i cant even imagine what it would have been like to be in a band with corgan. aside from the millions of dollars rolling in. that i can imagine and enjoy.

I've never been able to imagine this as an Iha song... I guess it's because Billy got his hands on it. Maybe it's also because it doesn't have James uncomfortably trying to belt out awkward notes.

No, it totally sounds like a James song--the vocal melody and the chord progression is total James.

Except the "And you can tell it's a just as well" bridge sounds like a Corgan thing, like he just inserted a new bridge into it for some modulation.

The Boy sounds a little too close to 1979 (as mucha s God soudns liek Bullet), and there really isn't any room for Believe. I'd say Believe could have replaced Stumbleine, fitting in between Ruby and XYU if anything...

The Boy doesn't sound like 1979 at all. Are you drawing the comparison because of the drumbeat? That doesn't matter.

There are so many ways you could change the tracklist of MCIS and still have it work. That whole 1979 EP was incredible. 'Cherry', 'The Boy', 'Believe', 'STRJ', and 'Ugly' were all strong enough songs to be on the album. 'Love' could be replaced by one of those and I wouldn't miss it.

Clearly it did because The Boy is not on the album, is it?

Yeah I agree with you, but I can also see the point of view that "Hey you buried my song deep in the album you jerk." When it came out, many many of my friends only listened to disc 1, disc 2 was just too deep for them.

The Boy is 1979 played backward.

i've heard this before but i just don't get it.
I happen to like the flow of MCIS, but if I were to listen to it on shuffle I'd still be as pleased.

I've always seen the sequence sorted like this
-intro-
Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness

-padded singles front end-
Tonight, Tonight
Jellybelly
Zero
Here Is No Why
Bullet With Butterfly Wings
To Forgive (I suspect billy wanted this as a single, his' follow up to Disarm)

-digging in territory for SP fans...-
An Ode To No One
Love
Cupid De Locke
Galapogos
Muzzle

-typical SP epic track and bookend-
Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans
Take Me Down

- digging deep some more for SP fans part 2
Where Boys Fear To Tread
Bodies
Thirty-Three
In The Arms Of Sleep
1979
Tales Of A Scorched Earth

-Beginning of the end- (with two eipcs!!)
Thru The Eyes Of Ruby
Stumbleine
X.Y.U.

-pre ending-
We Only Come Out At Night
Beautiful
Lily (My One And Only)
By Starlight

-outro-
Farewell And Goodnight

aside from the porcelina & take me down.. all those middle songs could be interchangeable without drastically affecting the continuity of the album. even the thee 'epics' are interchangeable. ending 1 is just a hint of the bigger ending to come, where billy double downs on epics and closers. even SD is laid out this way - singles in the front (quiet is a mistake), SP fan songs in the middle , epic silverfuck, pre-ending (sweet sweet) then outro (luna)

Yeah thanks for the upload...good read.

I think Billy was in one of those "sincere" modes while writing the liner notes - I like that he just fucking explained what some of the songs were about; however, it is still nonetheless a bit spoilt by the unnecessary attempts at purple prose. It simply detracts from readability with those overly oblique references. Billy is trying too hard.

Is the whole explanation of the "god is empty" line not a bit of a re-write of history though - he seems to be suggesting that he was basically a Christian (maybe not exactly in the strictest sense) even at that point? I know that he's always sort of played with vaguely spiritual imagery and themes throughout his life but I didn't really think this was the case.
