I don't know, but I sure related to it pretty well and gained some pretty valuable personal insights. Eh.. the guy from Fuck buttons couldn't get into it either, if that helps you out any. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/articl...t-fuck-buttons |

American Whisky Bar by michael turner
Sort of like his latter and better book, Pornographers Poem in that you do not entirely trust the narrator, in that they get corrected about things later. I never realized before that he was trying to challange the conventional novel structure in all his books, until he pointed it out in the preface. The epilogoue was a bit too far fetched. The story is quite laughably bad and crude, its funny that he found a scenario to justify publishing something so bad and awknowledge how embarrassed he is by it. i tried reading confederacy of dunces but it was too descriptive for my liking, i'll have to try again later. I like blunt things like bukowski. Im going to read ham and rye by him next. I also got 9 short stories by j.d. salinger. |

just read the Lovely Bones. B-
it had me engaged from page one to end, but had a very unfulfilling, hokey resolution. |

i really liked the lovely bones. curious to see how the movie's going to turn out.
for me: life of pi: B. interesting. first time i tried to read it years ago, i found the beginning to be too tedious. now i can appreciate how well it sets up what follows. w/o some of those themes, i'd feel a lot less oriented in what was going on. pretty brutal. the white hotel: B-. structure's a bit weird, but interesting. beginning i didn't really know what to make of. felt like i was slogging through the same themes over and over, i brought it to read at the gym on the exercise bike, it was seeming tedious for a while. found the ending to be pretty poignant, picks up pace and gains a lot of gravity. not particularly easy or feel good. the unbearable lightness of being: A. loved it. i'm going to try to read more of his books, i love his writing style. really, really enjoyed it. |

I really liked the human elements of the Lovely Bones and the characters, but I hate the author's ideas about the construct of the afterlife...it really took away from the book if you ask me.

yeah, i can definitely see why people would feel that way. i didn't see it that way, i really kind of admired the author for just "going for it". that sounds really cheesy, but i do feel that way. so often authors will either just sidestep the issue, or go with the old standbys, and she didn't do that at all. and of course, one of the risks of that is that plenty of people will feel how you do about it. the whole thing with ruth, if i'm remember the name right, and that guy... i just thought.. wow, this is going for it. author's not really holding back here. it really worked for me. very curious to see how it is in the movie, peter jackson said that was going to be the hardest part, not making the afterlife seem hokey |

Kafka on the Shore - B+ (Overall it was more readable and certainly more concise than The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, but I feel like I can't fully appreciate Murakami's writing without prior, intimate comprehension of various philosophical theories. Existentialism and metaphysical realities and all that noise.)
The Great Gatsby (for the first time since high school) - A (The closing passage alone justifies this book's canonical status.) Everything Is Illuminated - B (The language kind of veers into overly precocious territory at times, though it's often quite inventively manipulated, creating some powerful, vivid scenes.) |

Alasdair Gray - Lanark
a mountain of a book - it took me several months of on off reading to get through it, but worth it in the end. Probably one of the best books by a Scottish author I've read in a while. |

bad monkeys by matt ruff
not quite as good as set this house in order, but still a book i couldn't really put away until i had read it through. pretty fast paced, a really interesting story, good characters and a few twists which work, even though they do not come totally surprising. for me this one screams for a movie-adaptation. |

the preface or whatever said something along the lines of "most of the time we read books when we're young and they don't hold up over time, but this book is the same no matter what age you read it."
