Default analog tape transfers

freshly unemployed now with more time on my hands, i was thinking of finally getting around to transferring the 200 tapes i got from Joshua Hoffman ages ago to digital to upload to archive.org. i guess i'll ask here first if anyone knows of a good way to do this? i will NOT send these tapes to anyone so that is out of the question. i have a nice soundcard with analog in, optical in, and SPDIF in but my stereo only supports analog out via RCA cables. with me being unemployed, i don't have money to dump into buying a fancy receiver with optical outs either. so, question #1 is, would it be worth my time to start transferring these tapes with my current setup or is the consensus to wait until i have the funds to buy a 100% digital setup and go from there?

here is a copy of his old web page with his take on grading and generation. the tapes i have are in RED. you all tell me if there is anything on here worth transferring and in what order they should be done if it's something previously unavailable or better gen/source than what's out there already. these have been collecting dust on a shelf ever since i got them and i'd rather get them out to fans to enjoy before they rot away. i'm not trading these, just seeing if i should transfer and upload for you all to enjoy or not. thanks.

The Smashing Pumpkins
total shows: 313
My Grading System:
Note: No grading system is flawless and my sound quality gradings are strictly a manner of opinion
5 - Crystal clear, flawless recording
4 - Lowered frequency response, but otherwise excellent recording
3 - Excessive crowd noice, overall distorted and echo on vocals
2 - Hissy and warbled, music very unintellible
1 - I don't have any of these and you don't want any of these
+ - In between the rating indicated and the next highest rating
- I own a CD copy of this show
audience (analog) recording - Analog source tape
audience (DAT) recording - DAT source tape
audience (MD) recoring - MiniDisc source tape
audience (VID) recording - Amateur video source
remastered audience recording - Studio remastered source tape
FM recording - FM broadcast source
TV recording - Professional video source
0 gen - Master copy
?? gen - Generation unknown
Low gen - Exact generation unknown, but most likely either 1st or 2nd.

i guess it might be, i never got around to listening to most of these shows or checking them against spfc. that one definitely is not listed on spfc. the show on Josh's list is labeled 06/02/93 and so is the cassette i have on hand. setlist on the case is listed as:
side a:
geek usa
rocket
today
i am one
quiet
siva
cherub rock
bury me

side b:
rocket
tristessa
rhinoceros
window paine
bury me
siva
soma
hummer

so, i have no clue what's going on with this cassette. there is a large possibility that it was either labeled wrong or some one got the dates or info wrong and it was traded to Josh like this. see if something on spfc matches this somewhat but then if they didn't get the date right who knows if the gen info is correct either? seems like two different shows since they double some of the songs, side a might be one show and side b something else. or maybe it's just garbage!
thanks for pointing that out. anything else in that list look fishy?

it's an old sony (TC-WR661) i got with my component system around '99 i think. i've done some tape transfers with it before, and even though there is the typical tape hiss i don't really know what difference it would make transferring it digitally, my ears wouldn't know a difference that's for sure.

06/02/93 Del Mar Fairgrounds, San Diego CA is 10/26/93 A long time ago, I recall it commonly being mislabeled as 06/02/93. Much like 10/05/88 was mislabeled as 04/10/88 for a long while.

I'm also sitting on some upgrades. Thom Jones bought up Dave Asselin's cassettes a years ago and I borrowed a few dozens tapes from him for transferring. I've transferred them all, but haven't done much as far as editing goes, due to laziness, a job that keeps me busy, and perhaps lack of interest.

I say you transfer these shows, but note my comments on some:

02/12/91 CBGB’s, New York City NY:
40 minutes, audience (analog) recording, 1st gen, sound quality: 3.5
The only circulating copy is from the "Party All Night" bootleg. Is this actually a 1st gen copy off the master or the CD?

07/31/91 Danceteria, New York City NY:
55 minutes, audience (analog) recording, ?? gen, sound quality: 3.5+
an unknown gen already circulating. perhaps this is better quality?

08/03/91 Maxwell's, Hoboken NJ:
45 minutes, audience (analog) recording, ?? gen, sound quality: 4
an unknown gen already circulating. perhaps this is better quality?

12/17/91 Whiskey A Go Go, Los Angeles CA:
60 minutes, audience (analog) recording, 1st gen, sound quality: 4
The only circulating copy is from the "Daydream Kisses" bootleg. Is this actually a 1st gen copy off the master or the CD?

01/18/92 Effenaar, Eindhoven HOL:
85 minutes, audience (DAT) recording, ?? gen, sound quality: 4
an unknown gen already circulating. perhaps this is better quality?

01/28/92 Luxor, Cologne GER:
80 minutes, audience (analog) recording, ?? gen, sound quality: 3.5+
an unknown gen already circulating. perhaps this is better quality?

02/14/92 Astoria Theater, London UK:
70 minutes, audience (analog) recording, ?? gen, sound quality: 3.5
an unknown gen already circulating. perhaps this is better quality?

10/19/93 Warfield Theatre, San Francisco CA
10/28/93 SNL Rehersals, New York City NY:
45 minutes, audience (DAT) recording, 4th gen, sound quality: 4
It's likely from the PRO video, not an audience DAT recording

There's no way to have a 100% digital setup when you're involving cassettes. There will need to be an analog to digital conversion at some point. I've just been using my DAT home deck for that. You'll need to get something to handle the A>D converstion that has an optical or coax(SPDIF) out.

andrew,
i have no clue about the lineage of any of these shows other than what i got from Joshua's list that i copied word for word how he listed them and graded them. i guess all i can do is transfer them and see if they sound better than what's out there right now. i would assume that these were all tape to tape copies and the gen info is what tape gen they are, not copies from CD or CDR.

so for the ana to digi conversion, you would recommend waiting until i get a receiver that has a digital out to my digital in on my soundcard and not just going RCAs to the soundcard? it may be some time before i can do that, but i definitely don't want to transfer these shows twice. so, if the best thing to do is to hold on to these and wait until i have a better ana to digi setup, i'm all for it. i just hope i have the time to do it then. that's usually how it goes, when you have money you don't have time, and when you have time you don't have money

just know that since i'm not into trading anymore, i'll be happy to put up what i've got on archive when the time is right. no sense in holding on to this stuff anymore. i may inquire about a few shows that i once had on CDR that seem to have degraded some that i would like to get again if anyone wants to supply me with or let me know where they can be downloaded from, didn't see them on archive. 1993-07-30 iowa city, 1994-07-12 st. paul?, 1996-10-26 moline, 1994-03-25 davenport.

thanks

I suppose a comparison would be the only way to verify that the cassette copies you have of the shows that have been released via bootleg CDs are from the bootleg CDs or not.

I was suggesting you get a hold of an analog to digital converter, not necessarily upgrade your receiver. Although, one can find great deals on receivers these days on amazon or newegg. I bought an Onkyo receiver for just under $250 earlier this year on amazon and it's definitely better than the previous no-name receiver I had.

You might try finding those shows on the hub. I have no idea if it's up and running these days...

You should transfer these ASAP, they aren't circulating or are circulating very lightly/incompletely:

10/19/93 Warfield Theatre, San Francisco CA:
100 minutes, audience (DAT) recording, 3rd gen, sound quality: 3.5+
--incomplete transfer by DE circulates

06/20/98 Melbourne Park, Melbourne AUS:
140 minutes, audience (analog) recording, 2nd gen, sound quality: 3+
--ANA-2 transfer exists, nobody seems to have it

06/30/98 Bill Graham Civic Center, San Francisco CA:
130 minutes, audience (DAT) recording, 2nd gen, sound quality: 4+
--all the copies I can find of this are flawed

07/08/98 State Theater, Detroit MI:
115 minutes, audience (analog) recording, 2nd gen, sound quality: 3+
--ANA-M transfer is out there but nobody seems to have it

These are (potential) upgrades:
04/22/94 Breslin Auditorium, East Lansing MI:
70 minutes, audience (analog) recording, 3rd gen, sound quality: 3.5+
--ANA-4 transfer circulates

These are alt. sources to already circulating stuff:

12/16/96 San Jose Arena, San Jose CA:
180 minutes, audience (DAT) recording, 3rd gen, sound quality: 3.5+
--if this is in fact an AUD and not the ALD source then it is uncirculated

05/14/98 Spielbudenplatz, Hamburg GER:
110 minutes, audience (MD) recording, 2nd gen, sound quality: 3.5
--FM sources circulate

The Moscow recording is not real, and if you paid attention, you'd know he doesn't have that cassette anyways as it is not marked in red. For a short amount of time, the show being traded out by one guy, and as soon as everyone got their copy, we discovered that it was a fake. It was 5/26/98 or one of the other FM broadcast shows from the Euro 98 tour. The guy passed it off as 6/11/98 and of course got a lot of trades out of it.

Pat, I definitely have the St. Paul show from a reliable source, maybe some of the others you mentioned. Will go dust off my spindle...

Curt

Edit: I couldn't find St. Paul, I did however find Davenport and Iowa City. Davenport sounds god awful, Iowa City is pretty good, but archive.org is giving me an upload error at the moment...

If you don't up the shows I will upload them tonight/tomorrow...problem is though this thread is from 2009 odd so looks like this could be a doomed project. As I'm putting everything up on archive anyway I'll continue with uploading them..

Pattycakes must of got a job

Ahh, I knew it was January, but I didn't notice the year. Anyway, I uploaded 7/30/93 Iowa City. This is my first time using archive.org, I uploaded .wavs and I understand they will make mp3/ogg conversions automatically from that.

Smashing Pumpkins Live at Palmer Auditorium on 1994-03-25 (March 25, 1994)

The Smashing Pumpkins
Date: 1994-03-25
Venue: Palmer Auditorium
City: Davenport, Iowa

Taper: unknown

Source: AUD -> DAT -> SS mic > D7 -> CDR? -> EAC -> SHN

Flaws: There are some minor skips at 7:22 and 7:30 on disc 2 track 3. And this is the most important part because Billy is
talking about playing a new song for the first time on the entire Siamese Dream tour (which turns out to be B.W.B.W.).

4. Today
5. Rocket
6. Rhinoceros

8. Drown

5. Bullet With Butterfly Wings
6. unknown instrumental / Spaced (tease) / Suffer (tease)
7. Silverfuck / Jackboot
8. Sweet Sweet

Notes: Well, I'm pleased to say that I was personally on the barricade at this show. I didn't know it at the time, but this
turned out to be a pretty monumental show. It was the VERY first live performance of B.W.B.W. ever!! A whole 19 MONTHS before
Mellon Collie was released - and I was only 5 feet away - hehe. Anyway, this show holds the ONLY known tease of Communication
Breakdown [Led Zepplin], one of only 4 known teases of Spaced (and recall that Pisces Iscariot wasn't released until
Oct. 94 - still 7 months from this show), as well as one of the very few versions of Bye June (which you can tell that
Billy would've played the whole thing if he could only have remembered it). It also has only one of 3 known teases of
Unchained [Van Halen]. And it all happened in a matter of 15 minutes. As I said, I didn't know the full meaning of
this show at the time, but I'm glad I was a part of it.

If pattycakes77 ever rises from the dead I'd love to see that 1991.11.11 tape transferred. As sad as it sounds, an ANA-5 is probably an upgrade to my ANA-? transfer.
