I don't think I've ever seen the whole thing with the unaired songs. I just found it on youtube. I remember really loving this version of Snail. I also remember Garson being very distracting. Thoughts?

I'm gonna dig into this.

I've noticed that during the original run, as their (Billy's) fame diminished, he became a bigger narcissist. How quickly he is to correct himself when he says "our songs" and other "banter" during that last era of the OG SP. Also Mike Garson is VERY annoying, especially during BSBT.

I can't speak for his creative output outside of SP (he only played Bowie's music) but if a musician makes me want to turn it off I don't think that makes them superior in any capacity.

I think stuff like this from the machina era is partly why the reception to the reunion was somewhat flat. They were acting like a band that had been around for much longer than 12 years. Billy was already very reflective on their legacy and the instrumentation is pretty adult contemporary. It was the wrong move for them to be giving off that vibe. Then they obviously they broke up and put out a greatest hits which further cemented the "this band is old and over" feeling. That was a big hurdle to get over for casual fans I think.
