This is a Two Gallants messageboard
I'm doing a literary analysis of this short story because of this board... indirectly, anyway. I had to pick from about 50 authors so I picked Joyce and then pick one or two stories to analyze and of course this title immediately caught my interest. I've been able to expand on the main characteristics and basically make it a psych paper about narcissism so yay for that.
ive actually never listened to the band but if this spotify update would actually work im gonna get on that |

Never read the short story, is it good?
What the Toll Tells would be on my top 10 albums of all time if it weren't for that one (arguably?) racist track. I'd say if you're leaning depressed these days, it's almost a dangerous band to listen to. My favorite songs are "Some Slender Rest" and "Threnody", mostly because they put me in that black hole of depression really nicely. Last edited by bignothing : 11-24-2015 at 11:47 PM. |

I've been listening to some of their stuff tonight. I am immediately drawn into it for sure. Going to do some more listening.
As for the story, it's alright. Not standout, though. Basically about two vagrants who scam someone. One of the characters does all the work though, which leads to the question of what he gets out of the other person, so there's some interesting psychological dynamics to write about there. You don't even see the scam in action, it's mostly about the other dude who doesn't do anything, and how he feels about the situation he is in. Otherwise, Joyce just seemed to be totally obsessed with Dublin and so this story and the rest of The Dubliners short stories all paint a picture of a dirty, depressing city. |
