thread to discuss Interpol's 5th album El Pintor
Im loving it. I like it as much as Turn On The Bright Lights at times. No filler at all.

haven't you already had your chance to discuss this album at least four times already?

i was front row for interpol at a festival seven years ago in montreal. to get there my girlfriend and i worked our way to the front row during macy gray. the highlight of the weekend was definitely being front row for macy FUCKING gray.

I've read on a few sites some pretty glowing reviews of this. Noisy, Drowned In Sound, etc. Saying it's their best since TOTBL. I'm just not buying that. No way in hell. Extremely boring album.

I was looking forward to it, but I've given it one listen and basically forgot about it. It seems they've entered that stage bands sometimes fall into where they essentially become a parody of their former selves. I doubt they will recover.

Breaker 1 is probably the closest they've ever come to sounding like Joy Division.

they were okay live. just okay. i saw them years ago open for the cure during curiosa festival and thought they were one of the worst live bands i'd ever seen. definitely a studio band. they played some old songs, and those worked the best. their new stuff was pretty forgettable. their bass player now seems to be on a lot of cocaine and head bangs like he is in metallica or slayer or some shit. (slayer is not shit, metallica is shit). anyway, the whole thing of everyone wearing suits in the band is pretentious as fuck and looks really dumb. they have a keyboard player at the back who just look like he's floating on opiates staring off into space. guitar player guy is all posture. actually whole thing of them live is posture. they aren't amazing players. the songs aren't catchy like they used to be. paul banks stage banter was incredibly lame. very vegas lounge act shit "blah blah blah on the bass..." lots of elvis drawl too, dunno if he was trying to be funny or not. so as a whole it was nice to hear the old songs i liked from their first album finally sound decent live. their light show/projection was weak. there was a huge turnout for this show though. better bands through town have had far less. depressed me. maybe because it was a friday night.
interpol should stay in the studio where they belong and maybe not try so hard to create atmosphere that feels so forced and fake. i can't imagine wanting to buy the new album. anything i didnt recognize from setlist i assume was new and was pish. |

I agree with ya. I was really looking forward to it - hadn't ever seen them live (see: them coming the same night as Morrissey [at Thanksgiving Point in the Barn!?] in 2007, them canceling at In The Venue in 2010/11ish) - so maybe my hopes were a bit high.
Long story short, I think El Pintor is good - but doesn't blow me away. So with like 1/2 of the setlist being from that, I would have really preferred to see them on either prior tour, as I would hafta say that I like Our Love to Admire and the s/t more than El Pintor so far, which I'm sure is a pretty unpopular opinion, but, yeah. In sum: really enjoyed it, had a nice night out with the wife, but wasn't floored. |

Our Love To Admire is a good album. But this new one is somewhat better. There's more variation and stronger vocals on this one than OLTA.

I still envy some songs on their first record (well not the lyrics though). But it turned out as I mentioned in another thread they were a one trick pony. I heard what i assumed is the latest single on letterman and was bored. I really can't find anything interesting in this band past antics. |

Its called a Ian Curtis ripoff. The way he sings. I like Ian curtis' singing but its very specific and if you rip it off, people will notice. there's this band i really like called Motorama and the singer rips off Ian Curtis even more than Paul banks does and it's distracting at first cause its like dude you are NOT Ian curtis. It will sound blasphemous but i often found bands that rip off Joy division to be better than JD. But they wouldn't exist or be good if JD hadn't been around to copy in the first place.

Also EB you should be struck with lightning for saying a JD rip-off is better than JD
In a lot of ways I think Joy Division is the greatest band of all time and if they had gotten out another record it would have been fantastic new wavey greatness and they would have been absolutely huge |

i just think JD was still figuring it out. I also think they would have probably become great. I don't think their output is great. It's too uneven. It's good but i actually prefer New order even if really it's not much the same band. I just think NO has more good songs than JD has. Ok well i guess that doesnt count since they also have a lot more records. It is telling though that i think the best Jd song was the last Curtis recorded, Ceremony (which NO then redid exactly the same but with Bernie).

I hate when people say they prefer NO. I mean they're cool and all but it's like seriously?
JD's output with even only two albums is fucking untouchable. I don't think they ever recorded a bad song. |

The only criticism you can really level against them is that there's not a ton of range in their music it's kinda like the same sort of sound throughout both albums, but that was about to change....

Daniel Kessler has a lot more range and variation as a guitarist than Barney ever did. I respect Joy Division but I prefer Interpols more melodic and intricate playing over the really simple dissonant stuff that JD were doing.
