If bill was anything in the studio he was a wizard of the overdub and pretty much any song that’s a vehicle for stuff like he pulls off on sacred/profane is gonna be worthwhile for me, cause of all the weed and shoegaze when i was a kid trained me to like this horrible stuff

You gotta be down to gape at choices like having a track that consists solely of gentle strums on a distant rig of fuzzy sparklin reverb, sounding all alone in a big echoey warehouse or hangar for aeroplanes. And that’s all the track does or is for, the whole song. Just letting those strums ring fully and truly out, decaying dead alone as they began

Meanwhile the grinding traffic of life is up top, wearing your skins of your very noses down to nothingristle

I could see Siamese Dream vs TDS, but not the Fragile. The Fragile can be filed under 'disappointing follow up to career milestone' along with Adore.

But yeah

Fuck machina i, 6/10 at best

However throw in machina ii and i would be please to give a solid 8/10, some of my fave sp all time on that fucken machina ii

The Sacred and Profane is magic, have I said that yet. I have similar reasoning as Run To Me, with the stoner shoegaze teenagehood.

This.

And I do think The Fragile is great. Just not a definitive work a la TDS.

I recently listened to TDS and Fragile all the way through for the first time. TDS is extremely overrated. It sounds very, very dated to the ears of someone who didn't hear it in the 90s. The Fragile sounds like it could have come out last year. I dunno. I really wanted and expected to appreciate TDS based on the context I had, but was just really disappointed by this so called legendary album.

Songs like Sacred and Profane, Raindrops, and Imploding Voice, for me, are early signs of the decline of his songwriting. Here he has songs which go on for way too long, have no defining guitar parts, no memorable vocal hooks, no arresting lyrical content, nothing interesting or provoking about song structure or sonic atmosphere, and basically just feel like the musical equivalent of a man peddling on a stationary bicycle for 5 minutes 45 seconds.

I hated Raindrops on first listen, and have grown to sincerely dislike Imploding Voice, but The Sacred and Profane is synesthesia

The worst song on Machina is Glass and the Ghost children. So bloated and nothing the least bit interesting about the melodies.

Actually, I haven't listened to the entirety of Machina in like 8 years. My memory is foggy. I just remember that track as really sticking out as being shitty.

In the day of digital media, I sort of just stick with the tracks I like and discard the rest.

It's kind of boring, probably their weakest multi-part epic from the original run. But worse than Crying Tree? Worse than Imploding Voice? No way.

honestly I fucking hate Imploding Voice and the more I think about it, the more I feel it's just the worst fuckin song from Machina. Just terrible. And extremely grating and obnoxious

@RBG: Man, I've always really liked Crying Tree. It's one of the few songs on Machina that has the vintage, depressing, grunge vibe of MCIS. Has some great guitar tones too, sorta reminds me of the Love solo.

Imploding Voice isn't great, but it's good enough for a fun pop-song. It's at least kinda catchy.

man, it just kinda prods along pretentiously. I'm listening right now for the first time in ages. It sounds like Our Lady Peace.

Imploding Voice is an ear worm in the worst possible way. Like if you listen to it, you'll wake up the next day with a throbbing headache and it will play relentlessly in your head all day

Crying Tree is just utter shit, I really can't even comprehend how you could enjoy the studio version. It actually sounds like Teargarden

Actually, Ghost and glass children isn't that bad. Better than I remembered. I take it back, it's not the worst track on the album... Definitely not. I still won't listen to it again any time soon though.
