Default how do you expect the new pumpkins album to sound?

i'm not talking about how you want it to sound so please refrain from going on about wanting to hear a "return to form" from "when he was in his artistic prime in the mid nineties" or whatever

i expect it to start where machina left off. perhaps TFE with more guitars. if you look at the artistic progression it seems like he's going more and more for big psychedelic sounds, something ethereal. with jimmy in tow i guess we could all expect more rocking because its necessary with his army-march precussion style (which is probably why billy had trouble with jimmy's contribution in TFE, which i think was intended to be a more mellow album in general) ... i'm thinking more in line with Heavy Metal Machine, i.e. it'll rock but in a "different way"

what do you expect

I think it'll have a couple short balls-to-the-wall sort of hard rockers on it just to kind of show they're back to rocking (think The Everlasting Gaze). But I think a lot of the album will be kinda longish almost-but-not-quite epics along the lines of Glass and the Ghost Children, Porcelina, and MSOTS (the song).

As for the production, I really have no clue. I'd bet that they're not going to go back to anything conventional (ie. it won't be "raw," it won't sound like Zwan, etc.) but all the same, I don't know it'll be as adventurous a sound as TFE, Adore, or even Machina. I tend to think that they're going to go for a sound that'll sell records and get radio play, but they're not going to make as many compromises as they did with, say, MSOTS, where the intent to make a safe pop record was so obvious that the album suffered for it. I think they'll have one eye on getting back into the commercial rock game, but this time with the realization that there may be no mythical "next record" to do the stuff they really want to do. I think they'll lay most everything out on this record instead of holding back.

I think the sound will be similar to "All Things Change" and "DIA" but it will also have heavier tracks like Corganist said.

I expect the first SP2 album, and all follow-up albums, to be loud at any volume.

I think it is going to move forward from the point of Machina, as well. At the same time, I think that it's going to have an interesting opposition within itself, kind of like MCIS did, with the play between light and dark--only this time, I think, the dynamic may be between more dimensional sounds (like the ones on Machina I and TFE) with buried vocals and more straightforward, deliberate stuff. It seems like there was a lot of a play between depth and a flatter, more rigid, harder-to-pin-down sound that happened within individual songs on Pisces, and it seemed to happen again on Machina II, but more separately, as a distinction between songs.

I think whatever's next may translate that "wall" of sound into something more dimensional with more distinct layers of guitar, but that there will be room too for some more direct stuff with more intimate vocals--kind of like the way songs like Obscured or Crush punctuated Pisces and Gish by giving back a sort of sonic reference point that the rest of the album took away. I don't really expect it to sound at all like any of these songs or albums, just to use a similar approach in terms of creating opposition. It would be really interesting to hear some kind of leitmotif or something to draw that opposition together, too.

I expect them to commission Kid Bopz to produce their first album, rendering their previous masterpieces to the beautiful sound of a group of screaming children.

I completely disagree with your description of those songs.

Listen to album versions of the first 2, then the 11-29-00 versions, & call me in the morning. Everything's going to be ok. Its not too late for you.

At Jimmy's drum clinic last summer he said that they were planning on stuff like ode/geek in SP2.

I don't mind the prog rock too much.

that would kind of contradict what he said about not expecting to hear the pumpkins as we knew them.

i kind of hope its not true. seems like it'd be a step back ... maybe they'll rock ultra hard though somehow in a shoegazer kind of way

Does this mean it will have the clipping issues like MSOTS?

I wasn't saying those songs fit the description I gave. Obviously, G+tGC and Porcelina (and to a lesser extent MSOTS) are epic songs. I was basically saying I foresee the album songs being reminiscent of those songs sonically and structurally, while still not quite being long enough to be considered epics themselves. Basically I'm saying I think the songs will have the same sonic grandiosity of the songs I mentioned, but won't necessarily be as sprawling.
