Alright, THAT I didn't know. That makes a lot more sense to me. I had figured he just being another trendy asshole celebrity like John Travolta or whomever because I never heard a peep about the Scientology stuff until later on in his career.

It's still incredibly stupid and doesn't change my opinion beck being entirely overrated.

Beck had me at:

'Give the finger
To the rock n roll singer
As he's dancing upon youuurrrr paycheck
The sales climb high through the garbage pail sky
Like a giant... Dildo, crushinggg the sunnnn'

I was like damn. That burns.

lol, just complete garbage eh?

I like Beck enough for what he is, but the double standards that people have on Netphoria can be a little much.

People are always making fun of Bush lyrics, but honestly, as weak as some may be, theres none remotely close to being that terrible.

bush lyrics don't make sense even if you hold them up to scrutiny. people can do this fuzzy, even if you couldn't even imagine how to understand complex poetry

They're alright. I'm not wowed by it or anything though. Don't get me wrong, I like Beck enough... I just find it funny that people wanna bag on other good artists due to their stupid lyrics yet they're still all about Beck.

Bush has stream of consciousness lyrics in the same form that Beck does. If anything I think Rossdales writing style is even more cohesive.

It's making me laugh how you can't see why Beck is the type of artist smart people are inclined to enjoy as opposed to Bush and RHCP

But really, for me, lyrics can take a back seat if they sound really cool and fit the music... As long as they're not hateful and totally ridiculous. Bush's lyrics don't really inspire me much, but they sound really cool and create a mood with the music and the vagueness of the lyrics can let you just attach any message you want to the music.

I'm struggling thinking of how to explain Beck to you, but it's clear you don't get the overall point

Theres nothing remotely intelligent about any of Becks lyrics though. They're certainly as stupid as Bush and RCHP. Despite the Chili's having some embarrassingly bad lyrical content, I'd even go as far to say that most of their lyrics are even MORE intelligent than Becks.

I don't need you to explain Beck to me at all. I grew up on his music, I was listening to him when you were a little infant, I understand his schtick.

a need for "intelligent lyrics" and "cohesiveness" and shit like that just seems like an insecurity on the listener's part about their own (lack of) said things

Well it's about context and intent, and maybe you need to know more about Beck in the first place to understand this.

His mother was a dancer at Andy Warhol's Factory; his grandfather was one of the founders of the Fluxis art movement. Beck himself began in the anti-folk movement, often performing a leaf blower on-stage in a Darth Vader mask (see his first album Golden Feelings for a taste of what early Beck was like).

So when Beck has the off-the-wall lyrics, he is referencing absurdism, juxtaposing it with traditional folk music which would inherently not be absurdist. If you are just taking the lyrics literally and at face value, you are just simply not listening correctly.

I don't care if you don't like it, that's fine. But at least have a good reason for not liking it other than "Oh what a dumb Scientologist" or "His lyrics are random and don't mean anything lol".
