I haven't been able to connect with Radiohead or any other band like I have with the Pumpkins. Radiohead is a little too smart, too calculated, too controlled. There really is no other band like the Pumpkins and there never will be. The fact that Billy couldn't sing but he tried so hard is what sets them apart. It's will over ability.

Yeah Radiohead seems too pretentious and technical
SP is just the right amount of pretentious and technical but also sloppy and cheeky enough to make really sublime music |

Kid A is a disappointment after OK Computer. It's the not as good sequel to a great movie that more people go see than the first one just because of the hype around it.

also i heard thom yorke once declare that radiohead songs were "just pop songs". i really doubt he is more pretentious then billy about his music. both bands are notorious as having great b-sides. |

Seriously stop using the word "pretentious" when what you mean is "I don't understand it"

Pretentious is actually a word more apt to describe Billy's lyrics if anything

semi trolling, but I stand by it. BC can write a memorable tune. If you strip away drums/guitars/words and programmed the melodies and chord progressions of SP songs into a MIDI file and did the same thing to Radiohead music and listened to both it would be very obvious where the talent is.
Maybe you're a lyrics person and like Radiohead because they say "the raindrops" for 30 minutes |

I'm confused. What does Radiohead have to do with the original point of this thread? Whether or not they're better than SP, SP is certainly unique. No other 90's alternative rock band went in the operatic and ambitious direction they did while creating so many successful sounds and songs.
I don't think it's some crazy thing to say, there's no other band who could write and perform Hummer. Over time, the hyperbole here has warped people's minds. You can discuss why SP was a great and unique band without automatically implying Led Zeppelin is shit and My Bloody Valentine never existed. |

Look, I love SP. I prefer them to any other band from the 90's.
But it just isn't true that no one else was doing what they were and statements like "no other band could pull off a song like Hummer" should be super questionable to anyone who knows a bit about rock music SP is a band that I think of as not being the best or the most important at any one thing, but being very good at a lot of things |

Pretty sure Radiohead's arrangements for the most part are more sophisticated than SP songs I'm not sure at all what you're talking about here In fact if you start learning the chord progressions you'll find Greenwoods chord progressions are much more clever than Billy's Not that it even matters |

OP should have just said SP is my favorite band from the 90's not make some demonstrably false claim of no one else in that decade being comparable to them |

Wow other bands are great too what an observation. Bands may only be discussed and ranked according to Elphenor's Specific Band Evaluation Scale (tm).

If you actually read the thread you'll see I only suggested Radiohead were similar in scope up until others rated them according to their own Specific Band Evaluation Scale

I'm with you here. The power and straightforward guitar rock of SP will always rule to me, but Radiohead were able to distance themselves from their past and reimagine and conceive a new vision moving forward possibly better than any band ever has. Kid A and beyond is fresh and new but completely Radiohead. They were able to do what Billy desperately wants to - get complete artistic license to do what they want without losing their old fan base, gaining new fans, and remaining critically acclaimed. In Rainbows is fucking gorgeous.

The unique appeal for me:
I was a metal kid. I dug hair metal in the 80s and towards the end of the 80s got into thrash metal and learned to appreciate the classic rock that came before me. Although Slayer and pre-Black album Metallica remains some of my favorite music ever I could not commit completely to thrash and death metal 100% of the time. I found myself meandering toward goth chicks in high school and developed an appreciation for The Cure, The Smiths, Joy Division and others. By the early 90s what was considered metal was just lame. Hair bands were clearly phony and way too garish and indulgent. As a Gen-Xer in high school in the early 90s this became the definition of uncool. Enter grunge. Nirvana, Alice in Chains (I saw them open for Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer and get booed off the stage), Pearl Jam etc. was where it was at but didn't quite fill that hard rock void in me. It was too stripped down and the lack of over-the-top drums and guitar solos wasn't fulfilling. Then I found the mighty SP. Elements of classic rock, metal, new wave and goth, and indie shoegaze melded together to form this original and eclectic sound. Roaring guitars, insane drumming, and the ability to shift seamlessly from hard rock to soft sounds blew me away. They legitimized metal in a new way and became my band. |
