Teargarden was two things..

the first was billy's overarching concept.. the idea of the fools journey, as well as his stash demos from which he was to create studio recordings for 44 songs...

the second was eschewing traditional music distribution in favor of free distribution of the music, one song at a time.

He's obviously abandoned the second point. Whether he's keeping to the original creative concept is arguable.

I think because he signed to a label again, they probably said no to the album being released for free first then being sold a la In Rainbows. So he had to go the route of it has to be sold first then it will get d/l by everyone (possibly) for free afterwards. That's just my guess.

I think BC has also acknowledged that he isn't stupid, and if people want it for free then they will just torrent the tracks anyway...

Getting rid of the d/l links for the early Teargarden stuff should be viewed as a good thing, given the unrelenting mediocrity of the majority of those tracks. Bill did the internet a favour.

Fair enough. I just see so many people complaining about things just to complain... The whole Oceania sucks bc of these low quality 30 sec clips for instance. Lots of people have valid criticisms backed up with sensible argument. Most don't. It becomes hard to discern.

Byrne (Thu 2 Feb 2012):

Quote:
Tell us about the new album, Oceania

"The band as a whole worked on that on a creative level. Billy and I have been making music since I got hired. We're working on the overarching project Teargarden by Keildyscope which is the free 44-song deal. Billy and I have been making music since I got hired. I'd never been in a real professional studio so I had to learn the ticks of the trade and make it sound articulate like Jimmy was capable of doing."

While I don't think Billy is doing anything wrong by charging fans for Oceania, I do think it's annoying that he's claimed it to be part of Teargarden, which was, by his own admission, to be a completely fee album. It just makes everything seem weak, like he ran out of money mid-way through a mediocre attempt to reestablish relevancy. Aside from that gross overtone, there's nothing morally wrong about it. If anything, it's consistent with his inability to follow-through with initial plans he draws up.

think the problem here is the assumption some of you have that billy knows what the fuck he's talking about as far as TbK goes. whatever he's saying now that model/concept is dead in the water and he knows it.

I have no problem with Billy charging $ for his music. If he puts out an album, I'll gladly buy it. But don't announce that it's gonna be released to the public for free, and then completely change your mind and take it back.

Could Billy be any more schizophrenic?

Oceania may be the first SP album I don't buy

Last Pumpkins music I bought was Zeitgeist. No American Gothic, no Teargarden EPs, no reissues.

Wait, I did get the If All Goes Wrong DVD and was disappointed.

GATMOG, the Metro DVD, Chicago songs, Djali Zwan, his "autobiography"...what am I forgetting here?

Billy has a habit of getting us excited about shit and then not doing it. There's certain things about his public life I've just come to expect.

I hereby predict (mark my words) that within 5 years:

Teargarden will be long abandoned and Billy will have some lame-ass way of not taking the blame for it.

He will be bitching about how much he hates Mike, Nicole and Jeff.

He will have lost any shred of credibility as a public entity by suing someone over some stupid shit: guitar pedals, Machina II, etc.

AND.....

Having lost all perceived control over his bandmates, celebrity, financial viability and personal life he will resort to acting out his control freak narcissism on children.

Billy will be the next Michael Jackson. Mark my words!

Only in the respect that he has been murdered by someone close to him -but instead of his Doctor, it's Monte who administers the fatal dose.
