Anyone kinda wish they'd just make a record in the vain of Pablo Honey or The Bends again? Or at least just hearken back to that sort of style a bit more?

I'm serious. I think their best work took place during Pablo Honey/The Bends/OK Computer. It'd be nice to see a little bit of rock come outta their music again.

this new record has really sent me on a Radiohead spiral.
been listening to stuff from all eras.

while i honestly do think that critics these days only praise them because it's the chic thing to do, any nobody wants to be 'the guy who doesn't get it', i really do believe they are one of the most splendid musical acts of our time. just an incredibly rare group of incredibly rare individuals, who made very mortal music when they started out and continued to evolve in so many ways, to make some of the most tasteful music ever recorded. maybe not technically brilliant, not too glossy, not 'perfect', but always having character, always taking the interesting road, challenging and still being so immediately accessible somehow. i just listened to Fake Plastic Trees and was just so moved. what a long way they've come since then. just fascinating human beings - either as clever adults, or as raw, awkward 20 year old making music.

that joanna nuisance (amirite?) thread on the music board is all about 'brainy artists' and that's all good and well, but to be able to combine high musicianship with good taste - THAT's the real challenge.

tl;dr totally drunken rant pls ignore

they've been praised so much and received so much attention, it does almost feel perfunctory when they release an album and everyone goes gah gah over it. But they're just that good. How many bands can really say that they have put out so many classic albums which all try to do different things while all finding popular acclaim among their fans and critics alike?

I wouldn't even put Sgt. Pepper's in their top 5 best releases personally.

I mean The Beatles are very close to my heart and the kind of band where I can't pick eternal favorites... which parts of their work I appreciate the most is always in flux. But I would throw out a list like this (not necessarily in this order)

1. Abbey Road
2. White Album
3. Rubber Soul
4. Magical Mystery Tour
5. Beatles For Sale

If you had to pick the best albums in 3 album segments that couldn't overlap at all Pablo Honey/The Bends/OK Computer is the best work. I mean can you really argue that Kid A/Amnesiac/Hail to the theif is a better run of work? In Rainbows/TKOL/Moon shaped pool surely isn't any better.

The songwriting on Pablo Honey is like ten steps below any of their other albums.

The best three album streak is obviously The Bends->OKC->Kid A

it's also a three album showcase of the band's biggest sonic change

I'd agree with that, but I'm talking about 3 album segments... You can only start again after 3 albums.

I'm not talking about: "Bring back more songs like Creep man!" but I miss the lack of any rock elements.

You belittle, but you didn't pick a 3 album segment... You have 3 choices:

1: Pablo Honey/The Bends/OK Computer
2: Kid A/Amnesiac/Hail To The Thief
3: In Rainbows/KOL/Moon shaped pool

Clearly number 1 is the best era so I don't know what's so strange about wanting to hear a bit more of that kind of sound in their newer music.

there is no reason for me to engage in your absurdly arbitrary game so that I will concede Pablo Honey, although a mediocre album at best, is part of some mythic cycle and you can walk away feeling like it is actually a good record

Well maybe saying it's "great" is a bit of a stretch, but I certainly prefer it to the new stinker of an album.
