It seems like you'd be tired of losing face
Like you'd want to put the children in their place
The more you have to tell them to do their chores
The more you run the risk of being ignored

If you're lucky they'll turn out as good as you
You tell them that they're good kids
But you know that it's not true

Your father drank a little
You're on liver number two

Progress has a way of feigning ease
Convenient new inventions bait the tease
For though it is impossible to cure
A husband bent on cheating
The oxygen's depleting
A child who's always bragging
A wife's persistent nagging
We're equipped to live as though it were

If you're lucky they'll turn out as good as you
You tell them that they're good kids
But you know that it's not true

Your father drank a little
You're on liver number two

Face down head high look into my eyes, long gone,
no one no time much to my surprise, long gone,
cold sweat hot head ain't no way to be, long gone,
sweet smoke red eyes I can hardly see, long gone.

when you were young you were the king of carrot flowers
and how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
and holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet

and mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder
and dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
as we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for.

and this was the room i knew one afternoon i could love you
and from above you how i sank into your soul
into that secret place that no one dares to go.

and mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
and dad would dream of all the different ways to die
each one a little more than he could dare to try

I came out from under her warm sheets
Into the brisk late October
If only for one last hope
Not wanting my time with you to be over

I'm staring up into the sky
While all the rain is pouring down now
I'm reaching out for your hand
While evil beings hold me backwards

All shapes and shadows move in and out
And hover round my bed
Voices arrive and disappear
I want to talk to them

Darkness disintegrates, I'm rising
I'm rising toward a light
A light leading over hills and meadows

I've risen up from the dead
With the burning leaves of autumn
If only for one last chance
At all of whom have been defeated

To put on my father's wool coat
To smell my mother's fragrances and perfumes
To find my young brothers and sisters
To never leave or let them go

Houses adorned so beautifully
The Marin headland sun
Lost verses well up my eyes and ears
A lone mandola strums

On Tamalpais' warm springs
The many places we
Laid down in sleepy hidden shadows

I see you well and clear
Deep in the moonlight dear
Your radiant August eyes
They are the suns that rise
They are the light that lies
Lay in these lost verses

I came up from under the ocean
Evaporated sea saltwater
A mist above the skyline
I haunt the streets of San Francisco

Watch over loved ones and old friends
I see them through their living room windows
Shaken by fear and worries
I want them to know how I love them so

Fog horns will sound and wake you
Is it my voice you hear?
Footsteps are moving across the floor
And you know I'm near
Laughter carries up from the hills
And you are well and clear
To fall into the light I follow

I feel you oh so near
When mourning doves appear
And ghosts of April rain
Echo and refrain
Soon finding their place in these lost verses

They fill the foggy days
That hide the hills away
That steal our time
They are the picturesque nights
The casting city lights
On the bay flowing
Into the ocean glowing

*electric guitar breakdown

if i wrote a song like this i'd probably toss it aside and think it's too repetitive with too much banal lyrics (though some of them are good)

i mean i love sun kil moon but he has some songs that are essentially one chord progression with 98 verses

Yeah he could whittle it down a bit: "houses adorned so beautifully" is emblematic of the myriad show vs tell violations littering what are otherwise some interesting lyrics.

I think that's one of his best songs. No lyricist comes close to Kozelek for me, he can be as indulgent as he wants. I have a hard time with his newer stuff though

i want to clarify that what i meant to say by that was, that it's funny how different people have different criteria for what makes good art, let alone favorites. i could be writing something and think it's bullshit and another guy might think it's gold.

re: kozelek, i do like him, but i find his newer stuff a bit disappointing, in that they're usually less musically inspired, and have to do more with his desire to talk your ears off. "i watched the movie the song remains the same" is a good example. i still enjoy listening to it sometimes, it's got its own introspective journey kinda thing, but Ghosts of the Great Highway stuff was more to my liking

same. I thought every one of his major releases under all monikers was totally solid until Among the Leaves. I did like Benji a bit more... Carissa and Michaeline are great, classic Koz songs. I can't even remember the newest one, Universal Themes I think it was called.

what in the fuck are recondite sails?
how the fuck can a sun be labyrinth borne?

it's pretty difficult to read lyrics w/o music and get the impact. Sometimes good lyrics sound totally stupid when read aloud like poetry.

in liverpool
on sunday
no traffic on the avenue
the light is pale and thin
like you
no sound down in this part of town.

except for the boy in the belfry
he's crazy. he's throwing himself
down from the top of the tower
like a hunchback in heaven, he's ringing the bells in the church for the last half an hour.
he sounds like he's missing something or someone that he knows he can't
have now
and if he isn't, i certainly am.

homesick
for a clock that told the same time
sometimes you made no sense to me.
if you lie on the ground in somebody's arms
you'll probably swallow some of their history.

and the boy in the belfry
he's crazy. he's throwing himself
down from the top of the tower
like a hunchback in heaven, he's ringing the bells in the church for the last half an hour.
he sounds like he's missing something or someone that he knows he can't
have now
and if he isn't, i certainly am.

i'll be the girl who sings for my supper
you'll be the monk whose forehead is high
he'll be the man who's already working
spreading a memory all through the sky

in liverpool
on sunday
no reason to even remember you now.

when you face the beast
turn on the light inside
that is yourself
its alright, if its a crime

will the loss of garden
reap the beauty
that is with ourselves
its alive, for this time

in the fallout of eden will the eye let you decide
or will the moment of innocence
slide on the unknown
will it slide on, the unknown

...

sorry, wrong thread. I did write those... : p

I don't know why you're not there
I give you my love, but you don't care
So what is right?
And what is wrong?
Gimme a sign

What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more

What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more

Oh, I don't know, what can I do?
What else can I say, it's up to you
I know we're one
Just me and you
I can't go on

You don't know me
Bet you'll never get to know me
You don't know me at all
Feel so lonely
The world is spinning round slowly
There's nothing you can show me
From behind the wall
Show me from behind the wall
Show me from behind the wall
Show me from behind the wall

Unhappy

a shadow is a dark place
where you can see outside but not be seen
and I can sense a smile upon your face
and you turn around and don't see me
...why don't you see me?

you're happy when you're lying in your bed
to know that someone's always thinking of you
it makes the doubts fly quickly from your head
up up up into the air in your room

and you told me that everything was ok
I bit my lip a little tighter and walked away

you took away the candy from my mouth
and filled it up with really old saltines
avoided ever being figured out
by changing my reality to dreams

and you told me that everything was ok

this is a great song and i love the singer's voice but the guy who moans "it's not your problem" in the background just ruins it for me every time

yeah that part is super lame, and usually the interplay between their voices is the best part about this band.
