SP was my favorite band in high school and nobody laughed at that
Most people I knew liked them actually because of their pop songs |

most people don't even know who the smashing pumpkins are. anybody who is listening to a band from the 90s is listening to nirvana, not SP
everybody knows nirvana, but only one of my teachers knows SP. nobody else that i know of besides my friends, of course |

I understand crazy obsessions with singer-songwriters, there's a lot to latch onto with lyrics and fashion and everything but he doesn't seem to care about lyrics or the melodramatic girlyness of Billy. He just likes that the band is technically good, which I think is weak |

I'm in middle school and my favorite band is Sugar Ray. Pumpkins are third behind the Ray and Powerman 5000.

I'm talking about people who don't really care about music. They like 1979 and they like Smells like Teen Spirit because it's just pop with guitars |

What I didn't like in High School as far as music tastes was the division between people who liked pop and people who liked straight prog and metal.
I pretty much only met people who listened to exclusively 15 minute songs or only 2 minute songs. And pretty much nobody liked Punk |

i feel like this has been discussed before, but all signs point to the fact that i should love prog rock music but i still fucking hate it.
edit - but you said "straight prog" so i guess i fall in that category. i prefer cosmiche, ambient, or even space rock over that even if you really want to look at it under a microscope. now that i'm thinking a bout it i'm not sure what the line in the sand is for me. a lead singer or singing in general is the most obvious one i stay away from i suppose. i can't stand the overly theatrical nature of some prog which to me often comes across as broadway camp. |

like i hate that prog music that changes tempos or structures 30 times in a song and the vocals are in different time signatures and don't really follow a cyclical structure
i mean it sounds that's what meatloaf songs do its like its being played at the wrong speed or you're watching a musical on fast forward ugh i need to get this off my chest guys |

christ, so many people are fucking up in this thread. who gives a fuck. the smashing pumpkins are my favorite band by a longshot. fuck you. and liking a band for their super technical drummer isn't "really lame", at all, by any stretch of the imagination... y'all really gonna split hairs over reasons why people LIKE sp? give me a break

It's about the fact that half the time Ram27 comes across like he would love to drink the sweat from Jimmys underwear. I can only imagine how this would seem to a bunch of high school students. |

I love psychedelic and jerk off to Pink Floyd but there's that element of child-like pop that's involved and the lyrics actually mean stuff |

For the record I've never said that shit in real life I mean I play drums so I notice stuff he does and think it's really interesting. It's not like I'm jacking off to his picture Quote:
I'm not totally into the band like some people. They're my favorite band because that's what I listen to the most. It's not my lifestyle or anything. I don't have a Zero shirt or a weird haircut. I don't talk about it that much in public. I don't really need Billy to be some sort of emotional anchor for me. I like the band because of the way they sound and the atmosphere around their songs. And for the record I like some of the lyrics too. |

That implies you do bring it up |

SP was my favorite band in high school and then you work backwards from them isolating the elements you like the most and you find the undiluted version of that and then you have a whole ton of favorite bands

That's exciting
Yeah like My Vitriol, which I just found out about, is like the SP wall of guitar turned up to 11 Most other bands I've checked out with that same guitar thing going on have really boring drummers though. Or like the guy in MV, he's like Dave Grohl. Really solid but not very interesting |
