ok so i'm lolling pretty hard right now because i'm reading the pitchfork review right now and

"The arrangements suffer from a whiff of generic, corporate-rock slickness"

oh man they used the exact words that i've been mocking

meanwhile a huge, animated SONOS ad featuring ?uestlove animates itself enormously and animatedly while enormous ads for indie-flavor-of-the-moment records and local big venue shows for animal collective and (lol) Passion pit (nothing slick or corporate about a band that was on a twilight sndtrk) flash by on the sidebar

PITCHFORK (TM): Your watchdog against generic, corportate slickness. BUY TICKETS TO OUR MUSIC FESTIVAL!

i usually read the first few paragraphs to scan for words to describe the music that make me think i may like it

seems like they hire a bunch of lit majors so they do a pretty good job with this

and they've generally stopped with the standard they used to have where the first two paragraphs of any review is some kind of diary entry for the aging hipster/critic to wax nostalgic about how hip he or she is.

I haven't looked to see if there was a Billboard review, but saw this:

I thought you had read the review already before you said that.

I can't really take reviews seriously when half of it is actually a review about the artist's past releases.

Metacritic doesn't seem to capture how positive overall the reviews have been. It's at a 72 now, which makes for the highest rating of any Pumpkins album on that site, but they have lumped in quite a few of the lukewarm or negatives ones while omitting most of the very positive reviews.

that's because they don't count every single fly by night SEO review page like you guys seem to be unable to ignore

I'm not "counting" them so much as simply posting what they say. The thread is just to aggregate the reviews, not to comment upon their value or whether they indicate anything about Billy/the band.

Kerrang! (positive) and The Guardian (mixed) added.

i think some of them comment on their value as websites, e.g. artistsdirect

i'd say the Guardian review was negative, personally. that NME guy who didn't know anything about Bowie chips in on the comments section, for reals!

My favorite is the review (forget which) that talks about busting out your "Loser" t-shirt.

The author was trying to feign some sort of historical knowledge of the Pumpkins, but obviously makes a major mistake by confusing "Zero" with Beck's "Loser" (the latter of which I'm not sure was ever associated with a t-shirt). Hilarious.

i don't think you should ever judge the music pitchfork likes because of how they write.

They're slick, corporate and selling an identity. Like everything else in media, really.
