Sonic Youth... Sufjan Stevens... aaand gonna say Matt Sharp's solo record. It's brilliant, but I just am never in the mood to slow it down to that extreme.

Lately, The Books. I'm in love with the band, but haven't been able to sit through an album in the past month. Same with Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead at the moment.

it's surprising to me that so many people said Sonic Youth. that's like the one band I'm always in the mood to listen to.

no. all i have is downward is heavenward. and it's buried in my house somewhere and i don't even have the songs on my computer.

i listened to it a few times and was all "oh shit this is pretty cool." and then i just never listened to it again.

i also don't listen to the flaming lips very often. or fugazi, except The Argument, which i still listen to fairly often.

I'll agree with Low, I almost never want to listen to them anymore, but I still think they're a good band.

I find I can listen to Yoshimi any time I want to, no problem. Anything older than that takes a good bit of work, though.

Every time I listen to Yoshimi I feel...I don't know, fulfilled? It always satisfies me, I guess. I can listen to it any time I want. Their older albums...eh, sometimes, sometimes not.

he means "bands you're supposed to like and pretend to, but actually dislike"

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel. It's such a refreshing album no matter what mood you're in. Brings a smile to my face.

Or "bands you really like, but haven't been feeling like listening to at this particular point in your life"?

yeah it is quite common for me to really like something but just not be in the mood to listen. It's been a while since I felt pressured to like something...for instance, everyone wants me to love Depeche Mode and in fact usually assumes I do love them. I don't hate them, but make no bones about saying I'm not a fan. Radiohead, on the other hand.... I could go years without listening, but I know I really like them.

but listening to a band and thinking "man im not digging this because im not in the mood to listen to it but im sure its good" usually means that you dont like it but its so well accepted that you just try and rationalize.

a band like low is suppose to be gloomy and all that but i can listen to them in any mood and enjoy them. because they're good.

we're not talking about first listening to something and deciding if you like it. we're talking about bands we've established liking, but never really feeling like putting it on.

I think that both of those would fall under this category.

Seeing as Low was used as an example again: a few years ago I listened to them often, enjoyed it, and saw them when they came to town. But now I don't really seem to have the desire to listen to their music. I know they're good and have liked them, but I would rather not listen to them right now.

My Bloody Valentine which I also saw mentioned, on the other hand, for me, is a band that I have listened to, but for some reason or another I don't appreciate as much as other people, so I see it and feel like I should put it on because of all its acclaim, but I don't usually end up listening to it, which happens when scrolling I'm through my music.

Sorry if that was already mentioned. I just think both fit the loose definition.
