If you guys want to get rich quick I would recommend English Literature. Or History.

I already have a BA in English and I hate making the same mistake twice. My dad has a PhD in history so I don't want to make this a family thing.

We learn history so that we may become indescribably frustrated when it keeps repeating itself

It's worth every penny of the tuition fees

My ideas so far are paleonthology, oceanography, sociology or creative writing.
I've been talking to people and looking up different possibilities still, so idk.

It's exciting to have a ton of options tho.

I have a BA in philosophy, and then I started the Master of Creative Writing in 2016. That was a course work programme and basically a way of buying a series of tasks and deadlines, with an accompanying critical audience. It was expensive, but I would do it again. I'm about half way through mine, but I can't complete it now - it has to be completed within 3 years, and mine won't be, sadly.

I have a sister in law who is a sociologist at Stanford. She studies gender. Very interesting stuff

Yes, gender studies are fascinating. Def would be leaning towards that if I went the sociology route

when i have my orientation thursday i am going to ask about two different programs: one is a combined BA/MPP program that takes 5 years to complete (since i'm a transfer student, i'm looking at just under 3 years) or a 3+3 JD program where undergraduates students are admitted simultaneously (and conditionally) to its law school.

students complete the first 3 years of undergraduate study and spend the last 3 in law school and only get their BA after completing the first year of law school (yikes). but since i am transferring, this means only one more year until i could be in law school, which sounds way more fun. i meet the gpa requirement but i just gotta find out what else matters.

only 4 more years to earn my JD? yes, please. i feel lucky in a way i went back to school as an adult. i was working a lot in non-profits and one in particular frustrated me; i was working as a direct support personnel for people with disabilities and was appalled at how some of the staff treated clients. it ended with my anonymously reporting them to DCFS and OSHA. around christmastime i asked for time off to go to panama and i was denied. one night i was at home wondering what i should do and i decided i would go anyway and get fired and enroll in school when i returned. i started in january.

i realized most non-profits are shit and if i really want to help people, it's not going to be working for a bunch of people who don't care.

Why law school? No snark intended. It is uh. Usually not the best idea.

Sometimes law school is the quickest road to the destination of realising that nobody could pay you to be a lawyer, at which point you drop out.

Speaking for myself.

your alma mater, dude. you did go to depaul, right? what's so bad about law school? i want get into community activism law, not necessarily white collar stuff. i think that makes it a different type of idea, anyway. cause it seems like a good one to me and for me.

I did not. I went to gw in dc.

The school part itself is fine but it’s a scam and the market is saturated and it is entirely too expensive. No guarantee of gainful employment. Exceedingly difficult to get a job in any other field.

And law students are generally insufferable. In my experience.

I would look into what community activism entails and get a different degree more tailored to it. But I imagine you’ve done your research and have an idea of what you could do. Just think long and hard about it if it’s not gonna be free.

My 9-year old kid is walking to the shops and back, by himself. I had to break a note to have the correct change for the music teacher (who is currently in the living room with the 12 year old).

I was only joking when I asked the 9 year old, but he seemed so confident about going on his own, I didn't want to undermine that confidence. Everything is so fucking hard for him, he had a speech delay and he has epilepsy and is really short sighted, and has anxiety...the fact that he was OK with going to the shop and back on his own is a big milestone for him. But there are so many driveways and fast moving cars and he's such a dreamer.

So now I sit with my stomach in knots hoping and praying that he will make it there and back without being hit by a car. He didn't take a phone or anything.

ETA: after me crying actual tears of fear, he came back just now having bought apples and sushi
