main thing this thread has taught me is some of you use "filler" as a synonym for "songs i don't like personally"

i mean for fuck's sake one of the two singles was listed as filler in here. ROFLPOFF

i never understand why people go after Dusty all the time, either. it has a similar sort of effortless beauty & wistfulness as something like Whir, to me

yeah dusty is great. got a bitter-sweet, wistful vibe. hard to listen to within sigh-singing along.

Bury Me, Crush, Suffer, Tristessa. Not joking. I'm into the album way less than I used to be and I almost never do full listens anymore.

It boggles the mind that La Dolly Vita was a b-side, would have been a better choice for the album than any of the above.

Tristessa is a good song but it's a little bit samey compared to some songs from earlier on the album. I wouldn't really say Gish has filler

Gish is the sound of a hungry band, not yet jaded by success and fame. Adore is the depressing come down. Both great albums, but like comparing appels + oranjes.

can someone define "filler"? what are, in your opinion, the criteria that make a certain song filler? will it just come down to subjective opinions in the end? or are we supposed to somehow objectively narrow down the things that make any song inherently good?

I can listen to Gish from start to finish no problem.

Adore, I can get 2/3 of the way through but then it starts to weigh heavy. It's also much longer of course.

They are very different albums of course and serve very different purposes. Gish edges it for me though.

It isn't even that I don't like them all, it's that I just find them really comparatively flawed to everything else around them.

- James' background delivery really drags the whole of Bury Me down for me. Song has an amazing buildup and great release at the end though.

- Crush is probably the one I listen to most in isolation. I appreciate the dreamy vibe it has but I wonder if I'd care at all about it if not for that nice ascending bassline.

- Coming after Crush, Suffer is where I zone the hell out. It just meanders, but I really like the lyrics. Out of these four, would have replaced it with LDV if I had to choose one.

- Tristessa just kind of blends into the background for me. It's nice as rockers go, but it doesn't stand out. Whether or not a song rocks doesn't make or break it for me.

I don't think Gish is a bad album by any means, but I've just never been much for "psychedelica" or whatever you want to call it. The soundscapes they crafted before and after the album just appeal to me way more on the whole.

Both very different albums obviously, as others have said, and I also find Adore hard to get all the way through, but that's more because it's a serious emotional drain.

Tristessa is the most straight-forward, "short & sweet rocker" on the thing. It has a pivotal role as the album's final big ROCK song before they cap things off with Window Paine then finally the epilogue of Daydream

Crush or Suffer would be the only ones you could argue as "filler" but even so I think they have their qualities & represent a side of the band that may not have been fully represented if they weren't on the album

James' backing vocals on Bury Me are great and add to the song. Your opinions are wack. And it's psychedelia, tard.

If you feel like listening to a three-year old child with asthma try to play catch-up, sure. And I like most of James' songs.

Chalk that second bit up to just how little I care, house of ass
