i don't see the point in trying to find a "concensus band" for a message board devoted to a band (that isn't radiohead, that would be a different case. you think people hate the pumpkins here? sheeeitey!) but i mean joy division sorta stuck out to me as being prob the best 1 from what i've seen in my humble 4 or so months here so far
or well, radiohead |

wow, you are off base there. You realize Jazz is taking music theory to it's uttermost limits, right? It's totally cerebral as a pre-requisite to be able to play anything jazz oriented.

Left brained type music doesn't even consider theory and as a result uses very basic theory
Jazz is all about theory and so they can push it to its limits |

that's completely fucked & you've just PROVEN you don't know what you're talking about, mano
left-brained, objective music doesn't consider theory? that's the most contradictory thing you could post on the subject |

not to mention you're using the whole "left brain vs. right brain" myth, which is total pseudoscience.

well that certainly doesn't help in the discussing of a thing! in any case i think it's a pretty big misstep to try and class any music as totally "left or right brained" in the first place
going back to try and reverse your posts may make things read quite a bit differently but still |

My point was disagreeing with the notion that Jazz is the equivalent to literature in music

don't smother d.o.g. with concepts like metaphors & analogies all at once, he can hardly read our posts as is
p.s. i'd say jazz was more like literature than math, at least e.e. cummings type literature where you didn't know what was going to happen, & any & all rules you once thought you knew could be broken by the next line i've always loved it for that |

Mostly I just get butthurt by Jazz and Classical fans implying(or outright saying) that if it's not purely instrumental and theory based then it's all equally pleb pop music

Like post-punk is the genre for bookworms. Every major name in the game started out wanting to be a writer, coming at music from a place of literature.

some do that, perhaps, but fuck post-punk in general always sounded way more precise (in a way mathematical/calculated?) to me than any jazz i've ever listened to

It's just simpler while Jazz is more complex
I go to this Jazz show once almost every week |
