you know, i've never really listened to R.E.M. outside of singles. perhaps i should listen to one of their albums. you think this would be a good one to start with?

This was my 2nd REM album (new adventures was the first), and its definitely my favorite at the moent. Its a short listen, probably only 40 minutes or so, but almost all the songs are great. Its got everything REM is known for doing so perfectly: the pop song (stand, popsong89), the rocker (turn you inside out, orange crush), and the ballad (you are the everything, hairshirt). I'd have to recommend it. |

I'll probably get throttled for saying this but I would go with Automatic for the People.

Green seems to just be an incidental disc on Netphoria but I've always felt it was one of R.E.M's better albums.

If I were you, I'd just pick the album with the most of your faves on it. REM albums are so different from eachother. EG: I love Up but don't like AFTP. I, personally, only like certain shades of REM and they've always been consistent of those shades within a single record, but not discography-wide. You'll either love every album(yeah right) or you'll be playing craps. Go with what you already dig.

fables of the reconstruction doesn't get mentioned enough. there are good songs on most of their albums, though i haven't liked the last 2 at all. i'd say the first 5 are equally good (chronic town too), and are the reason they're important. aftp is their best outside of that, i don't listen to it much though cause it kinda depresses me.
