Default Is vinyl coming back?

I was in Barnes and Noble the other day and noticed a new all vinyl section. A friend of mine told me Hot Topic was now selling vinyl? Perhaps vinyl will rise as a hi-fi replacement for the CD format, for true music enthusiasts at least? There is something really nice about putting on a record that you just don't get with CDs/Ipods. Also I love having the big cover art.

I remember there was a recent vinyl purchases thread on here awhile back- how many of you guys listen to/buy LPs regularly? Thoughts?

It blows some people's mind when they go back to cds after listening their ipods for so long. vinyl isn't practical enough to ever replace cds. unfortunately their isn't a standard for mp3s or a way to keep people from dumbing down the quality with shitty sampling rate. i hate the downgrade in sound quality. I'm not about to invest tons in vinyl though. that would be a waste of money. I'm sure it sounds great but you have to invest so much into it that its not worth it.

The part of the sentence you didn't quote said "for music enthusiasts at least." I know the average radio listener isn't going to ever buy vinyl, but maybe among music fans it could emerge as an alternative to the CD format again.

I've been considering asking my dad for his turntable and getting some LPs. He doesn't use it anymore and if I can get new vinyl at shows and even Barnes and Noble maybe it would be a good investment.

It always has been an alternative to CDs. Like that guy said, it never left. Indie bands have just gotten bigger and the companies want to cash in on it. Amazon is even starting to promote their vinyl store a lot more. Which I guess is a good thing, I haven't seen the point in CDs for years. To me they just seem like a way to transport music data to your computer and then they get shelved collecting dust. Vinyl has more of a purpose. Plus a lot of bands only release on vinly, and it's more fun to go to a record store than a Best Buy.

I don't get this. Why is it any different than buying CDs? You don't have to invest anything, just buy what you want. In most cases records are cheaper than CDs.

if I pay for music (which is not exactly a regular thing for me, but regardless) I buy vinyl. I don't see the purpose of having a digital music collection and a CD collection when you can get bigger album art, usually more interesting packaging etc with vinyl. plus vinyl has a tendency to go up in value, much moreso than CDs, so if ever the desire to sell comes up it's a better investment.

Well, comparing the LP and CD of the same album could go either way. Always noticed the vinyl cheaper on sites like interpunk. On Amazon, Elliott Smith's Either/Or is like $14 on CD but $10 on vinyl. But in general, CDs go for 15-18 bucks and vinyl is usually under 15 all the time(if it's a single LP and not limited etc).

Good, independent ones?

Sure, the newest Decemberists album was $9.99 the week it came out at Best Buy, but I'm happy to have bought it on vinyl at Zia the week after for a couple bucks more, and actually cheaper than Best Buy's regular price.

Used vinyl is almost always cheaper, unless it is out of print or otherwise collectible.

One block from my apartment there's the best independent record store in the whole country. If I buy music these days, it's on vinyl, and it's there.

what most cases? independent stores or not, vinyl costs significantly more to produce, distribute and therefore has nearly double the price tag that a cd does. the cost of vinyl has consistently gone up over the years and has no signs of getting any cheaper. again, i'd love to see this "most cases" store that sells vinyl releases cheaper than their cd counterparts.

that said, i only buy vinyl unless it doesn't come in that format and i have to buy a cd or digital release.

In most those cases they're 2xLPs and just look at who the bands are. With the exception of Radiohead, NIN and Beck, records are just novelties to the companies that own those other bands. I guess Niel Young too but he doesn't count.

sorry, you fail. give me a list of bands, and i'll show you that nearly every single one of them is more expensive on lp. are you brain dead? you're talking to someone who has worked in the industry, and loves vinyl and has produced vinyl. i know what the costs of producing vinyl are. i have worked in independent record stores. in most cases you will find that amazon.com sells vinyl for less than an independent store would. are you dyslexic with cd vs lp? you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. now, illustrate your point of vinyl being cheaper "in most cases", or just shut up.
