Just because it wasn't long enough to make you gag doesn't mean it isn't long enough to take pride in.

No, in a thread on the gen board ages ago. I think most people would agree that it applies here too though. Anything to shut Steven Segal up.

Ok, I've been listening to the track for the past two days now and this is what I THINK.. it's an OPINION not the mark of absolute truth.

first off.. the majority of the hardcore tool fans that I know had this response to the song "It's totally different than anything they have ever done before." If you are a tool fan and you believe this, you are missing the point of tools music all together.

Tool has a formula, a bag of tricks that works really well for them and their sound. One could argue that they are just refining their own PARTICULAR craft while others could argue that they only know the same tricks. The majority of the songs they have written/played contain these features--

- Always (nearly 90% of the time) in the key of D minor.
- features a floaty intro.. only to be broken into a heavier metal like riff (this riff is usually introduced by a volume swell of maynard yelling)
- of course to odd meter time signature.. usually two different meters broken into two bars at a time.
- A first verse containing palm muted guitar, a defined bass riff with the drums tightly locking in.
- A breakdown at some point with dark age like vocals being harmonised in 4ths.
- The band comes back in loudly, Danny goes nutso with his double pedal.
- A tightly composed outro featuring the toms/kick imitating the motives of the bass and guitar.
- Of course lyrics are always dark, deal with death, depression, revelation or whatever. The lyrics do at times deal with insights to happiness but always presented in a dark manner.

I personally like the new single, but it's not something that stood out as WOW to me, it stood out as yet another finely composed TOOL song. My first reaction was 'yeah this could easily be featured on lateralus.. but any hardcore tool fan would not be dissapointed.. it features all of the things that make tool a marketable band to their fan base and the general public.'

Well, you were right on the first one. Other than that the patterns you pointed out occur in less than 50% of their music. You don't hear very many floaty intros on anything pre-lateralus. The lyrics tend to have a literal and abstract translation. Granted several songs are very dark sounded but in a different light many of Tool's lyrics can be inspirational. I think if you want to generalize the lyrics I would say that most often they deal with abstract human thought. Danny always goes nutso but he does as much work on cymbals, toms and his snare as he does with his double kick. I'd say he is one of the most balanced players I've heard as far as using every drum at his disposal very well. As far as the breakdowns, almost every Tool song has several break downs. Their music almost works like classical music with many variations on a theme eventually leading up to the parts playing off of each other and evolving into something else. Their outros aren't always similar, I believe what you were reffering to is more apparent in just Lateralus. As far as their time signatures, they aren't always broken up into 2 bars. If you'll listen closely though you'll notice that the way they use odd times and still manage to make them listenable its because they break them down into multiple patterns such as 7/4 being 2 2 3, 2 3 2, 5 2, ect. I see what you were aiming to do with your post but I believe you've really picked a few songs and tried to say that is the formula for all their songs, when you listen closely you'll see that isn't true. I'd say if anything that it changes vastly album to album.

By the way, people that look like or should just stay out of Tool threads all together. I'd rather look like Steven Segal than those two losers.

You can try to talk shit about her personal style all you want but I think you'll offend most girls here if you consider someone thats like five foot seven or so and 130lbs fat. As a matter of fact, according to all the weight charts shes just right.

On that note I always remembered TOOL being the most age/gender diverse gig I was ever at. Even more so than The Cure.

Not at all, all kinds are welcome. Its just obvious that you two are complete fucking dorks and total losers. Its more of a combination of how you act AND how you look, mostly the looks part being the icing on the cake. Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones and you two look fucking stupid. So does Fearfactory but he isn't in the dork ass category. He looks more like a metal head meth addict or a guy who would work in a junkyard.
