Default What was the peak bass "performance" in SP 1

I think the gish 88-91 era was the peak of the bass playing. After that for the most part is lackluster. Most likely because of belly himself.

Default The peak bass playing for the pumpkins.

I think the Gish era was when the bass playing was at its prime. After that it became (for the most part) lackluster. Mostly because of belly himself.

It has a pretty rad bass break. Guessing it's Boz playing

Really enjoy the bass on 'Hummer', 'Galapogos' and 'By Starlight'.
Overall, Mellon Collie probably has the most outstanding basslines.

Suffer! The bass riff during the flute solo... It's like a bass line ray manzerek could envy

Interesting call on that one. D'arcy didn't have much experience behind her, but the bass parts for that era are more melodic than later eras.

gish and pre-gish is pretty much the only bass focused stuff. i'd have to have multi-tracks to really distinguish anything else

I probably haven't been cognizant enough of what the bass is doing to judge bass performances in recordings. I should probably start thinking about that, instead of being to focused on the guitar. I think most SP songs probably just have the bass playing the root note of the guitar chords, anyways.

I like songs with droning guitar chords where the bass guitar is responsible for melodic movement. Gives them this sort of dark psychedelic feel.

I like "daughter" a lot.

I think there's some good stuff later on too, but D'Arcy was often buried in the mix. This show is nice because the bass is up there for a change.

https://archive.org/details/tsp1996-04-19.fm.flac16#

By the way, it's funny how Billy (most probably) picked up the bass at the end of "Farewell and Goodnight" and attempted to play "Mellon Collie" (7:20).

You probably were thinking of this lot. Quite handy to have a bass player that sticks to the root note when you have a singer/guitar player who can't play the chords properly.

All kidding aside : worst bass player in a "professional" band that i've ever seen.

the bassline for the verses on try x3 is pretty cool, & due to the relatively sparse instrumentation of the song ends up pretty much being the driving element of the tune - despite its simplicity - along with the drums; noticed this in particular while listening to a coupla live performances of it

The American 2000 dates with the mid show acoustic sets. Most notably any sbd recording from archive.org from that time. Like 5.23.2000

Dave Parsons seemed like a pretty solid bassist to me. Bush didn't have complex bass parts but he held it down well.
