Unhappy Is anyone here really good with macbooks?

I know this is an extreme long shot but I've tried everything and neither Geek Squad nor the place where I bought my computer can help me. Last resort is to take it to the genius bar tomorrow but I have had bad experiences with them previously.

So today I was just typing in a word doc and I hear the noise of something going into the trash. I was like huh that's weird, so I looked in the trash and it was the invisible library folder usually displayed on the home page of your finder (if you have it so you can view invisible folders obviously). I have no fucking idea how it went there. So I tried and tried to move it back, but no matter what I did I just got an error message that I can't fuck with that folder because it's important. WTF HOW DID IT GET THERE. I tried dragging it onto the desktop and a hundred other places. Finally I went back to the home page on finder and my macbook has replaced the folder with a NEW library folder, and opening package contents revealed they are in fact different. I tried to drag the old library folder back onto the home finder page, but instead it hopped out of trash and INSIDE the new library folder. No idea why it would move there but nowhere else, but ok, at least it's out of the trash.

I restarted the computer thinking that might fix the issue, and in fact it FUCKED everything up. My computer went back to factory settings for the most part. I lost all my bookmarks and add ons in firefox. A few applications disappeared. But what upset me most was that the document I had been working on, something I have been working on for several weeks, is gone. It's the only missing document. I searched every way I could think of and it's just not on my computer anywhere. I don't even care about the other shit but the thought of losing weeks of work on this just makes me want to jump in front of a bus.

So I took the computer a few places and no one could help me. One guy at MicroCenter offered to research the problem if I wanted to leave the computer for a few weeks... but 1) I am poor and can't afford some fancy data recovery for a single file and 2) I can't really go without my computer for weeks. I asked why he couldn't just take the original library folder and put it back where the new one is now, like is that not possible? He said it might be possible but he had no idea what would happen to my computer if he tried to do so. He also had no clue how library could have gotten into my trash in the first place, he said it shouldn't have been possible at all. And I really did not do anything I was aware of.

So firstly, does anyone know how the fuck this could have happened? And two, WHY is this file missing? I'd saved it dozens and dozens of times over the last few weeks and it is the ONLY document missing, afaict. Just because it was open when the library moved itself to the trash, could that have wiped the file off my computer? Or is it possible it wound up somewhere spotlight can't search? gah

What? This isn't/shouldn't be a macbook specific problem. It is an operating system issue... at worse. It sounds like a virus if anything. Do a scan with clamxav

well it's a problem specific to mac os

I did some research and a lot of people were just saying vague things like yeah you can lose files and your settings can go haywire if something happened to your library.

like yeah I know that help me fix it

I do not think it is a virus. I think it is more likely I somehow fucked it up even though I can't even imagine what I could have done to put a non-editable folder into the trash when I didn't even have finder open and was actively typing in another program

It's probably a good thing that you lost your manuscript, though, let's face it.

your best bet would probably be to extract your hard drive, take it to a data recovery shop and ask them to revive that one file.

i think data recovery guys are able to access a file index of what was recently deleted or corrupted, so that's why i propose that idea - it might be cheaper to ask for something specific. hopefully it won't be that expensive, but who knows.

the dude at the second place I went said that if I was running Windows he could easily just restore deleted files, but with Mac it's not possible and once something is deleted it's gone forever.

gaaaaa I don't even know where it went! I saved and closed it before I restarted the computer, then upon restart it was just gone

I had a quick flick through the story before shelling the file and, let's be honest, it wasn't exactly cutting the mustard when it came to justifying its own existence as a piece of writing.

Sometimes, decisions must be made on the fly and I figured in those moments that contending with all the frustrations of a hamstrung operating system would be a better use of your time than even so much as another minute of lovelorn masochism.

that sounds like bullshit

also, quick google search hints at possible solutions

i'd give it a shot if i were you.
just do it fast - the more you work on your computer after losing a file, the smaller the chances of it of being recovered.

I learned some neat tricks to optimize how spotlight searches... but yeah I have not been able to find it. I even tried things like searching the hard drive for certain strings of words or sentences from the document (which spotlight can do, cool) in case the file name got changed somehow. It just seems to be gone.

I am oscillating between trying to start this over right now before I lose too much of it forever from my memory, or just submitting and letting life clobber me over the head again. I know this is fuckin nuts but I feel like this is somehow her or her presence or something still reaching out to fuck my life up some more

nah chill out man. you can choose to look at it as a positive thing

i.e you'll rewrite it and let the previous version be a precursor, so as to make you more on point this time

also rbg, unsure from your phrasing if you know this, but normal or even advanced search functions will not be able to find anything related to a file that has been erased, intentionally or otherwise.

once a file is erased it leaves a 'residue' (i.e said file index) that's waiting to be overwritten, and you can only access it with specialized tools. that's what you need to go to a restoration lab for. seriously go asap. once that residue gets overwritten it's gone forever for sure, now there's still a chance.

reprise, yeah it's just that one file, the one that was open when library mysteriously hopped into the trash by itself. isn't that nuts? I was able to find everything else that went haywire and shit. The only other missing thing is my firefox bookmarks but who cares. so yeah, just one single missing file as far as I can tell. that's why it almost feels like the universe is just trying to punish me or something. I know that's crazy but losing just that one is so unlikely, it's hard to rationalize.

teh b0lly you are right it's not a cause for freakout, I can write it over. I do know that regular search features can't recover shit that has been deleted and I am taking the computer to the apple store tomorrow. My hopes aren't high though because they have been terribly ignorant in the past. Maybe I should look for some specialty place?

i highly doubt you'll find redemption at fucking app store.
those guys are there to sell, first and foremost.

your best shot is locating a specialized lab for data recovery nearby, or at the very least actual repair, and going there.

She let Linus have his choice of tablet when she was buying him one. However, he made the wrong choice by picking the Surface over the iPad, so she didn't make him dinner that night. While Maxbook got a sloppy joe and sweet-potato fries, Vixnix told Linus, "there is some more ground beef thawing in the sink and we probably still have a sweet potato left in the pantry; fix yourself up something."

Really sucks that you lost all your work, RBG :'(. Yeah, maybe see if you can take the computer to a specialist before the data is overwritten, but otherwise, I'd say just take a break from it and start it over when you're ready. It may even be better than the first because it's a second draft. I mean, you wrote the thing before, and you can write it again, even if it isn't identical. All the ideas came from your head, after all.
