marnie stern - in advance of the broken arm
i don't know what to think of this album. seriously. no idea. i love it and i absolutely hate it. does that make it mediocre? i don't know. i kind of want to listen to it right now but then i despise a lot of things about it.
i think that makes it kind of good. |

it's not really noisy. just a sprawling mess. kind of like free jazz but more like some prog rock

it's also very technical |

I could probably get into that, then. I've been listening to a lot of free-ish jazz type stuff lately in my car. 70's chick corea stuff. not that this probably sounds anything like chick corea. i'm offering that as an example, you see.

i felt the same way about this album when i first started listening to it under the guise that it was similar to lightningbolt
no i like it lots for what it is high energy pop with awesom song structures |

oh yeah, she's the girl everyone was shitting themselves over at SXSW. i remember that she was a good guitarist, but her actual songs + lyrics were pretty poorly written. i'll give her album a listen, though.

i heard she is from a wealthy 'great gatsby'-esque family and has never worked a job in her life. fuck her.

i totally agree with you alex. she could play anything she wanted to on guitar but for all their technicality her songs are just really uninteresting to listen to. if she toned down the finger-tapping and wrote something more songy and structurally diverse she'd be great, but for now her music just gives me a headache.
i like her though. she has charm. |
