Swimming in the ocean

My partner and I recently went to the beach at Asbury Park, NJ to hang with some of her college friends and their kids. While there, the kids convinced me to put my feet in the water. I did and the next thing I knew I had waded completely into the arms of the ocean. First time doing that in years and the experience was nothing short of spiritual. I take great comfort in being made aware of how vast the ocean, the word, and the universe are. It humbles me and instantly melts away my inherent narcissism. I’m just a cell within a vast organism. Being in the ocean helps me remember that.

What an ending

During the months that have passed since that September morning (ha) some have asked me what understanding of Nature one shapes from so strange a year? I would answer that one's first appreciation is a sense that the creation is still going on, that the creative forces are as great and active to-day as they have ever been, and that to-morrow's morning will be as heroic as any of the world. Creation is here and now. So near is man to this creative pageant, so much a part is he of the endless and incredible experiment, that any glimpse he may have will be but the revelation of a moment, a solitary note heard in a symphony thundering through debatable existence of time. Poetry is as necessary to comprehension as science. It is as impossible to live without reverence as it is without joy.

And every night when the sun went down
In the town where we live, the empty streets were lit
By reflective light from a distant sun
Bouncing off a glowing ball of rock
We just lied on the roof and watched
The moon, the moon, the blue light of the moon
We didn't talk and silently we both felt powerful
And like the moon my chest was full
Because we both knew we're just floating in space
Over molten rock, and we felt safe and discovered that our skin is soft
There's nothing left except certain death
And that was comforting at night out under the moon

I went out last night to forget that
I went out and stared it down
But the moon just stared back at me
And in its light I saw my two feet on the ground
