the piano sound is so synthetic it literally sounds like a poorly programmed VST plugin (it could very well be, i'm honestly not sure), the playing is dull, boring and void of any nuance - just heavy handed hammering on the chords. and most of all, those vocals that are so ridiculously up front, with that constant vibrato and cutting off of first syllables of words.

this is just really bad. the song itself would be listenable if only the execution was somehow decent, but as it is it sounds like a bad demo.
I was assuming that with all the hype regarding Rick Rubin producing that the album might actually be half decent, or at the least was void of all the production flaws we've endured over the past 10 years. But it really just sounds like more of the same.

I'm still hopeful that there will be some cool stuff on the rest of the album. I remind myself that Being Beige was my least favorite song on monuments and he lead with that too. One things for sure, whoevers managing him right now must be clueless.

I know its the art, and not the artist. But when the artist is such a terrible person, it really does hamper my ability to buy into the work... particularly when the work sucks.

good lord...

AJ is a walking encyclopedia of FOIA requests and as such shouts out more truth than you and your overly sensitive politically ideologue self can obviously deal with.

At least you can deal with the art if it holds up. That's more than I can say for some conservative minded friends I have who don't watch Sean Penn movies.

His Stalin portrait was a true memorable masterpiece.

rick rubin is a bullshit producer these days.
he certainly can (and has) legitimately wreck great songs with his awful production. the only reason he is still hired is because he's a brand name, a seal of approval for many people.

her'es a perfect case study for this.
same artist, same song, just different producer. first one is the original, second one produced by rubin for jake bugg's second/third album (i forget).

if you have the patience, listen to both the whole way through. the difference and lack of soul in rubin's production is staggeringly evident.

new version produced by rubin (song starts around the 1 minute mark):

the funny thing is, i happened to listen to the rick rubin version first, before i knew anything about jake bugg. it just came on the radio or tv. i didn't care for it at all and moved on, forgetting about it. only years later i heard the original, loved it and realized i had heard the same song before. terrible fucking soulless producer.

ok my final verdict is the same as the original one. it has potential but sounds like a demo and goes nowhere. but he does sound like he cares a little bit which is nice

Wow...incredible comparison.

The sound and mix of the drums is AWFUL in Rubin's version for example.
It's a much better build up with the rim click first in the original versiion by the way.

I also miss the vocal reverb from the original version.

yeah the drums on rubin's version are so disproportionately loud in the mix, it's like a four minute drum solo song. really, it's amazing to me he's still getting work. he's such a hack.

it's the equivalent of going to a famed michelin-starred chef's restaurant, ordering a steak, and getting a bowl of cereal with too much salt in it.

The RR version of LMGTWTY coming out on the Adore reissue after decades of hype and being just really unremarkable and inferior to the MII version was some good comedy.

Wow it just hit me now that the whole reason Billy worked with RR again is because we asked him to release that track. I had never connected those dots before.

Whoever thinks Being Beige is worse than Run2Me is delusional.

I mean, they're both steaming piles, but one is clearly more vile.

That's because Chris Martin can actually sing, unlike Billy.

Why does Billy keep addressing "Lovers"? Who does he think listens to his music now?

"Fat ex-stoners in your forties, won't you mourn with me?"
"Fishy-fanny, drug-addled Christians, won't you mourn with me?"
"Infowars Subscribers, won't you mourn with me?"
"Snarky forum browsers, won't you mourn with me?"

When exactly did Billy become all sunshine and rainbows in his lyrical content anyway? Seems like it started with Zwan and continued all the way through the Pumpkin "reunion". Has he ever addressed why the drastic shift?

It sucks. Not only can he not sing anymore, but the lyrical content is embarrassingly bad. If he's not ripping cool guitar work with Jimmy then he really has no redeemable quality as an artist anymore.

I wish he would just give it up already. Go the GnR route, have a successful reunion tour and then ride off into the sunset.

He acts passionate about not wanting to be a nostalgia act, yet that passion doesn't translate into the work at all. He clearly doesn't have anything left to say. He's gotta embrace the only thing he has going for him, and that's the old material.

I don't mind the sunshine and rainbows per se, but everything else has gone downhill to the point where that makes it seem shitty

The 2001 versions of El Sol were really nice
