upcoming:
Mark Kozelek
Bonobo
D'Angelo
Björk in March

and I need to sell my tickets for Swans at Thalia Hall. I could cry, god damn fuck, I fell in love with that venue's sound, I imagine Swans blowing your ears out there in the best possible way.

I'll argue that he isn't until the day I die. :P

Seven Swans is an amazing record. Lots of Christian themes, but in a sort of conflicted, tortuous way. Lots of concrete, everyday details grounding spiritual dillemas. Sometimes you don't know whether he's singing about Jesus or a guy, and I think that's the point.

Michigan has that sort of downcast, tangible Christiniaty mixed with economic depression, disfunctional families, and some sort of bleak hope.

Illinois is more flashy, but I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously - and there's a lot of gut-wrenching stuff beneath the surface. Casimir Pulaski Day would be a terriblly saccharine song if it were just a sad tale of a teenage friend dying of cancer, but what makes the song great is the crisis of faith the narrator through - it paints a stark image of believing and experiencing things you just can't reconcile with your faith.

The Age of Adz is flashy too, but in a different way. Sufjan obviously has a sense of humor. He writes deeply personal songs, but then he tries to signal that the whole thing is a bit ridiculous and self-important. There's a lot of self-awareness in his work.

I can understand how indie folk in the 2000s got to be a bit too much, but I don't think this applies to Sufjan's body of work. He's really good.

i actually legit hate faith no more they're a very fuzzyroses kind of band if you know what I mean but i do want to retract my earlier comments but you have quoted them for posterity

i would instead like to know why so many men feel the need to tell me that they don't get sleater kinney i mean what's to get we think they are a good rock band

haha wow, what
i think you're missing something there
if anything they're kind of a parody of the kind of stuff fr posts, i know patton'd probably "bust a gut" laughing at that statement if he knew what you meant by it at least

i think fuzzy'd actually made a special appearance in that fnm thread i bumped to clarify that he in fact "didn't quite get it, man" or something to that effect so there's one case for the witness stand at least

it's a desperate but subtle plea for help in seeing the light

i 'onno haven't you ever been baffled by a band that gets mentioned often but seems only alright to you
come to think of it i guess i haven't really troubled myself with those sortsa things since like high school or something, at least

all the time, i don't comment unless it's something like a trail of dead thread and i just have to say "i seriously don't even get what the deal is with source tags and codes" and ultimately that's a useless comment. dudes in the SK thread tellin us they the shitty go gos just make him look dumb

in this thread i criticized surfjam for being unbearably twee, that's different because it's specific. and yeah even his sad stuff is twee, everything he does is twee. I'll say he's probably the greatest christian musician of all time and i enjoy cuts from Illinois (esp decatur) but in general TWEE CITY POPULATION SURFJAM, ZOOEY DESCHANEL

No.

A dumb name or a name with arbitrary words is not what I'm talking about.

Like before Trots even mentioned "bro rock" I immediately thought of that upon hearing the name

The secret is striking the perfect balance between bro rock and twee. Then no one will think you're a manly brute or, worse, a girl.

rofl, that's just ridiculous to me. i don't give a fuck about the cred the music is pr much the best "alt metal" ever with an overlaying sense of humor about it all that was always more blatant with say red hot chili peppers or whatever. i don't like tool

what is it with the "bro-rock" paranoia over here anyway? anything that isn't outright & overly effete 24/7 gets the bro-rock/BUTTRAWK label or something? bullshit!

"bro-rock" is an illusion, free yer minds (& the butt[rock] will follow)

i'm gonna take that with a grain of salt considering the "they probably suck because of the band name" comment

stick to brit-rock bud, you'll come around someday

(hardcore's gone right?? i'm not going to be beaten over the head for that now am i??!)
