Cyr gets savaged in review by the Art Desk

I just came back from giving it a spin.

Album should have stopped right after Black Forest, Black Hills.

The last several tracks are meandering to godawful, and I think Tyger, Tyger might just beat out Widow Wake My Mind for the worst SP song ever. And that's saying something.

It's the same thing as Cotillions: Twenty tracks and half of them have no business being on here, and that's coming from someone who can find stuff like Cyr and Color of Love passable.

Not touching this again until I have the energy to go back, filter through it, and sort out my own collection of the better-passable stuff.

I didn't think it was possible but IMO they actually did put out most of the better ones in advance. Think about that.

For me the passable songs on the album:
Color of Love
Dulcet E
Save Your Tears
Wrath
Ramona could have been ok if done done better

Cyr.. for the first few listens

Wyytch but it's kind of generic hard rock.. and lyrics stupid.. and depressing song (not in a good way)

I mean they're all garbage.. these tracks are passable.. and the rest should have been cougar'd out of the studio

It doesn't sound like the Pumpkins. It sounds like Billy fucking around in his home studio trying to sound "contemporary."

That Clash review was just so spot on.

Agreed.

I think there's a salvageable EP in here, maybe a 9-10 track album with some different production choices, but as avery said, every song plods along with the same terrible-sounding drums, a melody that is all over the place but rarely anywhere memorable, cheesy synth lines and a distinct lack of guitar.

Just such a strange choice to release as a Smashing Pumpkins album.

And why not have 20 songs.

I can't stand it. I think there's maybe 2 or 3 tracks I thought were pretty good on Cotillions. Maybe the title track? I should probably listen to it again. Thought it was better than Ogilala.

Either way not a fan of folk player Billy.
