you could go further and add The White Album and Abbey Road, but then that goes beyond a 3 year span. Oh well, I hate arbitrary rules.

the thing is the guitar player wrote all their songs, and he is a fantastic writer.

he never wanted to license any of their music, but he was the anti-BillCo, letting democracy rule, and the other guys wanted mo money

his lyrics are consistently clever, and the arrangements/production on their early albums are really great. but shrek and annoying singer so they suck lol

You're right. Initial isn't really the word I should've used. I guess what I really meant to say was which 90's band had the best 3 year run in the 90's cause I wanted to focus strictly on the 90's output.

Pavement(92-94) is one I definitely forgot to add

One of my favorite bands of all time is Marcy Playground so I definitely understand the "BETTER THAN THEIR ONE HIT" attitude.

were you hip to them in 97 or whenever when they played "walkin' on the sun" at the ESPYS? that goes down as one of the worst performances i've ever seen. looks like it is not online but i just remember thinking "this is the not only the worst thing i've ever heard but it's also totally the wrong venue - sportsball people looking stone-faced and self-conscious".

1) Smash Mouth is the worst live band I have ever seen (not in person, but in footage)
2) Walkin' on the Sun was my fav song when i was like 12.
3) The music is fun and the lyrics are clever, but I would say its closer to something like Weezer in tone than Weird Al. Though they do have some fun novelty songs

Haha I was thinking the same. They're a band I never checked out at all (aside from the singles of course). As was mentioned, it was probably all of those shitty covers that turned me off

Good thread, Fuzzyroes. My answer is going to have to be The Smashing Pumpkins.
