i remember hearing this one story about their van breaking down in the middle of nowhere and the band members were tripping on shrooms and drinking cough syrup. 89ish? i think

You'd have to look up the interviews though, I don't remember which it was.
In Billy's 1990 Tour Diary (which used to be at Mike Potential's site, and is probably at starla.org now) he writes about the band attending a cookout at D'arcy's parents house in Michigan while they were there for a show, and later on how they all went down to the banks of lake Michigan and dropped acid, and that everyone except Billy got sick to their stomach. Later on in the diary he talks about them all using some mystery substance offered to them outside a show one night, and how it made their stay at the hotel that night really crazy (satanic messages, etc).

What a stupid thread. As if Jimmy Chamberlin was the only great drug addict musician.

False analogy. Hendrix played several bad shows due to over indulgence.

Quote:
His new group didn't last for long. The group broke up shortly after Woodstock because they weren't getting enough fan support. Hendrix then formed the Band of Gypsys. The most famous performance of this group was at Madison Square Garden. Here, Hendrix came on stage intoxicated by alcohol and drugs and passed out on stage. This was the end to the Band of Gypsys. Shortly after this disastrous performance, Michael Jeffery put the Cry of Love Band together. This band was a failed attempt to get The Hendrix Experience back together. Noel Redding joined but was fired by Hendrix. Hendrix, Cox, and Mitchell made up the Cry of Love and toured around the world. This would be the last true performance of Hendrix at his peak. After this point on in his career things would continue to go downhill with booing at his performances, loss of fans, and drug trouble.

So, he leaves the band in 1996, and then comes back in late 1998 or so to begin practicing for the Arising! tour in 1999. That's a crazy fucking turn around.
And from interviews we've gotten in the last few years it would appear he fell off the wagon again not too long after rejoining.

Heroin is really strong I cant explain how Jim can play proper. By other side you being on drugs gives you much more 'feeling' of things and more creativity.
One of Billy's no inspiration problem actually is the lack of drugs.

Anyway just out of curiosity, a friend of mine heroin addicted used to say 'heroin is like the cancer, once it gets into you it will never quit'.

I know it's contrary to popular belief, but maybe that's just how he functioned?
the dude had a metabolic rate through the roof, and could hardly contain himself.... it's like he's on steroids, but it's completely natural (thyroid dysfunction?). he probably needs SOMETHING to come down and function like a semi-normal human being.
I know a dude like that and he's constantly taking downers just to be normal. in his teens (before he took drugs, and before they even medicated for this stuff) he was a total wired freak. I guess you could go to the doctor for this now, but some people just choose to self medicate without fucking up their lives. being a rich rock star affords you not having to suck cock to do that either.
Jimmy might be that kind of person.
Then again we know there were a few OD's before he got fired. but we don't really know the details of that, maybe he's also suicidal ???
'

the idea that drugs produce better music in my experience is not true. and i think that in general, less musicians on drugs would be good. you can be a great artist who takes drugs and makes good music, but taking drugs will not improve your ability. from my experience anyway.

however, in the case of billy, who knows. maybe drugs would allow him not to overthink what he's doing
