The clicking? That's data being written to/read from the hard drive.

There are two basic moving parts on a hard drive. The disks and the read/write head. Kind of looks like a record player. Except the disk moves (usually) at 5400 rpm. The read/write head moves back and forth across the disk and does so dozens of times a second. That's what you're hearing.

I just learned about what a solid state drive was the other day when I was buying my new macbook. The guy was trying to sell my on the airbook cause the drive was solid state I guess and thus was running much faster with lots of programs open than the macbook, which has way more gigahertz or whatever. airbook was a hundred bucks cheaper but I couldn't abide lack of disc drive and miniscule hard drive

CDs will probably "die out" eventually, but there are still so many practical applications to the compact disc, I think it will be awhile. When I told the salesman at micro center that I watch a lot of shows and movies on my computer and still occasionally rip and burn CDs, he shrugged and told me the alternative was to buy an external disc drive. This just seems like a huge pain in the ass and probably not worth the price difference for just buying the computer that actually his the disc drive.

If you hear audible noises, back up the drive. Your HDD is probably on its last legs. You should buy a new one
Unless it's a fan sound in which case you're running too hot and it's mostikely something on the board, the fan itself, or a virus |
