Of course in the 90's for every Soundgarden there was 5 Hootie and the Blowfishes. It's been like that in every decade... But the cream of the crop still rose to the top... No good bands are rising to the top these days.

Even the "indie" culture is fucking pathetic. Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells, Grizzly Bear? Gimme a break.

I don't feel like anyone in 90's Rock was really pushing anything though.
They were just taking all these 80's genres and combining them.
And then MTV called it "grunge"

Yeah, but you still got some genuine, awesome music out of it.

Look, every genre ever that's made an impact was influenced by the music that's came before it. I don't think that necessarily cheapens it at all. It's only cheap when a band isn't influenced but is shamelessly aping another band. That's another story.

Obviously bands like Nirvana and Weezer were extremely influenced by the Pixies and it's clear in their sound, but really, both of those bands are still tremendously different than the Pixies.

And the bands that made it big in the 90's had their ear to the pulse of what was going on and were all artists who were obviously into and influenced by some really good music... If they weren't the 90's would have just been more artists like the plethora of cookie cutter hair-metal bands that were out in the 80's and in the very early 90's.

The thing with popular 90's Rock is that it was more retro than anything. It wasn't a "movement" like Punk.

What Nirvana and Weezer did was awesome and all but it was more emulation than it was innovation.

Music from the 90's that could be considered pretty innovative would be like MBV

I see what you're saying... But the same thing can be said about punk... Bands playing simple fast songs with powerchords. the Who was doing that shit in the 60's. And it's impossible not to hear the Beatles and surf-pop influences in bands like the Ramones.

Like when I was 13 and super into 90's alternative. I thought Radiohead was the most innovative band ever.
OK Computer was just pulled from Yorke's magical brain.

I feel ya man... But you wouldn't have discovered all of those awesome bands that came before if it wasn't for Radiohead opening up that "door" so to speak. That's what it's all about really.

You're (were) a total okay computer guy eh?

I've personally never understood the love for that album. I mean, it definitely has some quality tracks. But I failed to see the genius in it that other people seemed to.

I still think it's the greatest album of the 90's. That Ive heard at least.

But the point is that, yeah, you start with 90's rock and then you move on to the more specific genres that make it up.

How lame is it that Radiohead remind me of high school even though OK computer dropped at least 10 years before I started high school.

For grungetards, Kid A isn't the divisive Radiohead album, it's OK Computer.

It's not a bad album, I think I enjoyed the first 2 records more though.

I haven't listened to it in like 6 or 7 years though. It's possible I'd have more appreciation for it now, I dunno. Maybe I'll download it or pick up a copy when I come across it and give it another chance.

Can't wait for your thread on it, reminding us all what a great band they were and how some of their newer stuff is actually pretty good too.

That's definitely the most deplorable thing Nickelback have ever done.

What's the point of the music forum if we can't discuss music we enjoy?

Who really even cares about Nickelback?

I've never quite understood the rage that they provoke from people. Sure, they're a shitty cock rock band. But theres tons of shitty cock rock bands out there and you only ever hear people ranting and raving about Nickelback.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the lead singers such an ugly guy.

If he was some great looking guy I think people would hate them less.

Well, I agree with you there. It's kind of funny how the people that hate Nickelback the most usually like music that's just as bad as Nickelback anyway.
